General Description

Coordinates services to students with autism to optimize their learning in the school environment. Coordinates screenings, meetings, testing and transportation for individual students. Provides training and support to special education staff in special education procedures, regulations, and assessments. Monitors specialized instruction in classrooms with students in need of intensive support for autism. Coordinator evaluates instruction based upon specific standards and objectives established by Chesterfield County Public Schools and as indicated in each student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Frequent contacts at all levels within and outside the division are required. Requires timely and thorough handling of sensitive information and dealing tactfully with others. Considerable professional judgment is required.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitors and ensures adherence to policy, procedures, timelines and regulations regarding the special education process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in all areas of special education identification criteria.
  • Schedules special education screenings and eligibility meetings.
  • Facilitates/coordinates screening meetings, IEP meetings (initial, annual review and revisions), eligibility paperwork for special education and transitions for students with IEPs.
  • Coordinates testing to remain in compliance with federal timelines.
  • Attends IEP meetings and assures the development of standards driven IEP goals.
  • Coordinates special education transportation. Coordinates ordering of instructional materials, supplies, instructional technology and equipment needed for students served in autism classes.
  • Provides instruction and support and may assist with conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments and creating Behavioral Intervention Plans.
  • Attends special education coordinators meetings and disseminates information presented to ADP staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of alternative assessment (eligibility requirements).
  • Serves as testing coordinator for VAAP.
  • Coordinates services from private and public agencies (courts, doctors, social services, mental health, etc.).
  • Monitors development of IEPs in online IEP system and student information on division student information system. Administers IEP training and data entry.
  • Assists in hiring, training and providing input regarding teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ evaluations. Secures substitutes for staff.
  • Maintains contact with students’ parents. Coordinates with students’ home school in transitioning student to the least restrictive environment.
  • Assists in the development of the school’s master schedule to ensure support of the students’ instructional needs in regards to staff resources.
  • Responsible for all special education and legal issues related to assigned students. Monitors and assures adherence to policy, procedures, timelines and regulations regarding the special education process.
  • Provides training and support to special education staff in special education procedures/regulations, data collection and analysis and assessments. Provides training for new special education staff.
  • Monitors the delivery of research-based specialized instruction and behavioral/communication strategies for students with autism.
  • Conducts classroom observations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Uses standard office equipment and equipment related to assigned area.

Contacts:

Teachers, regular classroom and instructional assistants, Building Administrator and parents, Exceptional Education office staff.

Assists the building level administrator and staff from the Department of Special Education.

Decision Making:

Functions independently within the context of daily activities.

The employee regularly works in a school or office setting. The noise level is quiet to moderate.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to disabilities. Considerable knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction, learning theory and teaching methodologies for special education students with autism. Demonstrated ability: in identifying students appropriate for special education programs; to develop instructional goals for students within special education programs; to design and deliver instruction and assess student’s learning; decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning; to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action and to provide guidance and support to classroom teachers and paraprofessionals. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing; establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others

Supervise the instructional and behavioral services for students with autism. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments and to train and advise staff. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing within the school environment and with dealing with the community.

Requirements

Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in special education. Prior teaching experience required.

Preferred: Master's degree and leadership experience preferred.
