Position is responsible for coordinating, managing, developing, implementing, and monitoring curriculum and instruction for school library programs throughout the division. Complex work is performed within specific regulations, departmental objectives, and policies; employee plans own work and coordinates with others as necessary. Contacts are regularly and frequently made at all organizational levels within and outside the department to explain and implement programs and policies; professional judgment is required. The Curriculum Specialist provides leadership for the K-12 library programs through planning professional development opportunities, coordinating and managing school and community events, leading and facilitating curriculum and instruction development by monitoring and guiding program direction to support teachers, administrators, and families.
Essential Job Functions:
Facilitates curriculum development for K-12 library programs and coordinates the proposed curriculum through the approval process. Provides assistance and monitors curriculum program implementation throughout the county. Manages and monitors online curriculum documents. Develops guidelines for program and materials implementation. Aligns curricular materials, technology, and assessments with departmental goals and objectives. Analyzes standards and designs and revises instruction and assessments aligned with standards.
Provides program support for all school libraries through school visits, communications, and routine program evaluations.
Designs and delivers professional learning opportunities for teachers and administrators on a variety of topics, including using approved instructional materials and resources in alignment with library standards and technology instructional practices. Provides orientation on instructional resources for newly-appointed school librarians. Recommends subject area professional development for administrators and teachers; recommends licensure renewal opportunities.
Collaborates with Central Library Services for effective, standards-based operation of acquisition, cataloging, and circulation systems.
Collaborates with instructional specialists to enhance the instructional effectiveness of school library programs.
Serves as a liaison for the school division with the Virginia Department of Education, other school divisions, professional organizations and the community on school library goals and activities.
Serves as a professional resource for facilities and management. Works with project managers, architects, and other assigned personnel to create and build spaces that are most appropriate for library programs to include equipment needs and materials for instruction.
Coordinates library responsibilities toward digital citizenship, copyright and fair use compliance.
Works with school administrations and library staff to establish proper funding levels. Assists in the development of the budget and the monitoring of expenditures; ensures compliance with financial management guidelines and requirements.
Works cooperatively to acquire district-wide services to include database services and other library contracts.
Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Responsible for management of budget for designated programs, as well as budgetary-needs input, as requested.
Report Preparation:May be responsible to write reports relevant to job duties and responsibilities.
Equipment Operation:Proficient in the use of computer and general office equipment.
Contacts:Contact with all levels of CCPS personnel and various outside agencies. Regular contact with Facilities and Transportation Departments.
Work Direction/Supervision:Provides work direction to school librarians, secretaries, and liaisons. This position does not have any direct reports.
Decision Making:High level of independent decision making is required.
Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities:May provide input or recommendations related to policy changes.

Considerable knowledge of current K-12 literature, effective school library implementation, learning theory, recent research, school organization, supervision and management as related to public school settings. Demonstrate the ability to assess school library programs using national school library skills standards. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, program management, and research and planning. Considerable knowledge of the budget process, fiscal management and the securing of special funding sources for specified instructional areas. Working skill in the use of technology including word processing, spreadsheet and database software (Word, Power Point, Excel, and Google WorkSpace preferred). Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations; coordinate complex programs and activities and provide direction to and evaluate a diversified professional staff. Demonstrated ability to secure, monitor, and evaluate school library programs; to develop instructional goals; design and deliver instruction and assess students’ learning. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments and to train and advise staff. Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, program management, research and planning and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license and be licensed in Library Media PK-12. Must have teaching experience and/or any equivalent experience or training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid VA Driver’s License. This position is designated as a driving position. In accordance with Policy 5431, driving record checks are performed annually on individuals occupying driving positions.
