Director - Curriculum Development and Support (Elementary)

Provides leadership, supervision, and oversight for the Department of Curriculum Development and Support, to include division curriculum specialists for elementary content areas, the Office of Gifted Education, and the Office of Title I, for Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS). 
  • Leads the development of curriculum to support improved instruction throughout the division. Ensures that the written, taught, and assessed curriculum in CCPS is in alignment with state standards and requirements, as well as with local division expectations and policies; and that curriculum is posted in the division repository. This includes oversight of new Virginia standards adoption, following the state cycle of standards revisions in all areas.

  • Facilitates support for schools, utilizing the expertise of department coordinators and specialists, including oversight of professional learning and meetings of key school staff (lead teachers, department chairs, building leaders).

  • Leads the creation and implementation of division-wide curricular initiatives, including literacy plans and instructional initiatives. 

  • Supports areas of school and teacher needs, such as professional learning during teacher work week and new teacher orientation, as well as school improvement work.

  • Provides oversight to Gifted Education programming, in conjunction with the Coordinator of Gifted Education.

  • Works with the Office of Assessment to support elementary testing..

  • Oversees Algebra Readiness, Early Intervention Reading Initiative, the Virginia Literacy Act, or other relevant VDOE mandates and initiatives. 

  • Supports the work of the Chief Academic Officer for academic aspects of the division’s strategic plan.

  • Collaborates with the Instructional Leadership Team to support improved student outcomes.

  • Oversees digital curriculum tools, in collaboration with the Office of Instructional Innovation, including leading Request For Proposal (RFP) work to procure necessary curricular tools.

  • Serves on various interdepartmental teams, school board advisory boards, and external statewide committees. 

  • Contributes to division partnerships, events, and initiatives, such as community contracts and curricular events. 

  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Budgetary Responsibility:

Oversees the development and implementation of the budget for the Department of Curriculum Development and Support and subordinate offices.


Report Preparation:

Numerous memoranda and reports for the Chief Academic Officer, Superintendent, and School Board.


Equipment Operation

Operates personal computer, basic office equipment, and equipment related to the area assigned.


Contacts: 

Contacts are made at all levels within and outside the school system, including School Board members, various government and state officials, general public, parents and citizens. County Government Officials; State and US Department of Education; Staff from Other School Divisions, Regional Programs/Governor’s Schools; Parents and Citizens.


Work Direction/Supervision:

Provides supervision to curriculum specialists, administrative assistant(s), the Gifted Office, and the Title I Office.


Decision Making:

Makes independent decisions in the best interest of the school division to meet division goals and objectives.  The position interprets federal and state law as well as county and School Board policies and procedures.


Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities:

May recommend establishment and/or revisions to existing policies and regulations for School Board approval.


Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. May be required to lift boxes and other materials up to 25 pounds.


Work Environment: 

The employee regularly works in an office or school environment, the noise level is quiet to moderate.

Extensive knowledge of curriculum development and high quality instructional practices.  Extensive knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies of public school administration, instructional and support programs and the organizational structure of the public school division.  Extensive knowledge of related federal, state and local statutes, regulations and policies.  Extensive knowledge of budget management, strategic planning, policy development and the processes that effectively engage stakeholder groups on important issues.  Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive, difficult situations and information.  Demonstrated problem solving, decision-making and leadership skills; ability to analyze data, summarize and present alternatives to the Superintendent and School Board.  Demonstrated ability to coordinate and integrate various instructional programs and to communicate effectively.  Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships; motivate and inspire employees and community stakeholders.

Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.  An EdD or PhD in education along with three to five years of successful building or central office-level leadership experience is preferred.  Must hold a valid Virginia Driver’s license. This position requires the incumbent to drive.
