Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; two years of experience in grounds maintenance preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Experience in safely operating heavy equipment is preferred. Good oral/written communication, interpersonal, safety, and organizational skills are required. Ability to read and interpret manuals, specifications, and maintain accurate records. Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather while performing physically demanding work including but not limited to, standing and sitting for prolonged periods, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, stretching, carrying, and reaching overhead. Must be able to regularly move/lift 50 pounds and occasionally move/lift 100 pounds. Ability to operate and maintain specialized tools used in grounds maintenance and related building trades. Current, valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Duties
This position is a great opportunity to receive hands on experience and training in grounds maintenance with a safe, motivated and knowledgeable team. Experience working as a seasonal maintenance worker at Buildings & Grounds has proven beneficial to those seeking non-seasonal positions within the department or other related fields. Perform ground maintenance tasks such as weekly lawn maintenance by operating a lawn maintenance equipment such as a zero-turn mower, a trimmer, and a leaf blower. Also, perform other landscape maintenance work such as litter and leaf removal, mulch application, minor tree work, plant installation, and minor construction. Occasionally work along with Sheriff’s workforce crew doing similar tasks. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers and to be able to work alone or as a team. Perform other work as required.

Shift
Approximately 8 - 9 months; 28 - 40 hours/week; shift may vary Monday - Friday between 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; may include some evenings and weekends.
