Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology or a related field; one year of experience in conducting laboratory testing, preferably with emphasis on chemical and bacteriological analysis; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Working knowledge of the principles of chemistry or microbiology; of laboratory and field monitoring principles, methods, techniques and equipment. Ability to perform field work; to operate laboratory and field equipment; to work with precision and accuracy in recording data and maintaining records; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in collection of water samples and laboratory analyses; performs related work as required.

- Prepares standard media, solutions, reagents and preservatives for use in laboratory analyses and protocols
- Maintains and calibrates laboratory apparatus and field monitoring and sampling equipment
- Washes, decontaminates and sterilizes laboratory apparatus and glassware
- Assists in the laboratory's quality control program; performs daily quality control checks
- Documents the collection of samples by following established protocols; submits clear and detailed field records documenting sampling and monitoring activities. Enters data into Laboratory Information Management Systems database.
