ABOUT THE CLERK’S OFFICE:
The Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is the administrative arm of the Circuit Court. Our day-to-day operations significantly impact the Chesterfield community. The Clerk’s Office prioritizes accessibility, transparency, effectiveness and being constituent focused. The staff within the Clerk’s Office are responsible for providing administrative support, record keeping, case management, court-related financial matters, and, most importantly, adhering to the law.
ABOUT THE CRIMINAL DIVISION:
The Criminal Division handles matters related to felony and misdemeanor cases. The Criminal Division provides administrative support to the judges during criminal hearings; prepares court orders; ensures the proper reporting to agencies/departments; assesses fines, costs, and restitution; and maintains the court’s records and trial evidence. We are looking to expand our Criminal Division with a dedicated, caring, team-oriented professional having 3 or more years of experience in a court/legal environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Exceptional people skills are a must, as a large part of what we do is supply information, assistance, and support to customers who may be going through a difficult time. Criminal matters can feel confusing or overwhelming for many; therefore, clear, and compassionate communication is essential.
Our public service hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm, and standard employee shift schedules are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, though flex scheduling is available. Due to the nature of the service, we provide, telework is not an option.
This position is a part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as a Deputy Clerk in the office's Criminal Team. Duties include but are not limited to: assisting judges during criminal hearings and bench/jury trials and preparing court orders to memorialize the Judge’s ruling; preparing jail cards, arrest processes and other court/case related documents; setting future hearing/trial dates for cases; taking in evidence during court proceedings and organizing/managing the evidence for retention/destruction purposes. Duties may also include: receiving/processing new cases and filings/pleadings; receipting/ preparing appeal bonds; providing assistance to customers through the criminal call center; processing bond forfeitures; processing/ managing attorney reimbursement vouchers; preparing/organizing and submitting records for cases on appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court and Virginia Court of Appeals; processing appointment of counsel requests; establishing receivable accounts and collecting and properly crediting payments for fines, costs and restitution; issuing /tracking service of process; preparing pre-trial dockets; opening and distributing daily mail; composing written correspondence in response to requests from public safety entities, attorneys, inmates and the general public; updating automated case management system with case dispositions for dissemination to public safety/law enforcement agencies, and performing a myriad of other duties and/or special projects as necessary and at the discretion of the Clerk of Circuit Court.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

•High school diploma or GED; bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/public administration or related field is preferred.
•Three (3) years of relevant experience in management of a court/legal environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience in management of a court/legal environment or a related field.
