The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Senior Benefit Programs Specialist Community Outreach Worker to help individuals and families in Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights by providing services in one or more program areas, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medical Assistance, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
What You Do and How You Do it:
Conduct interviews with community members to assess their needs and eligibility for Social Services programs.
Provide comprehensive information about available Social Services programs at various locations within the community.
Assist residents in applying for public assistance programs and connect them with appropriate resources, including:
- Other social service agencies
- Private healthcare providers
- County services
Develop and maintain strong partnerships with other agencies, schools, and community programs to coordinate services and maximize assistance to clients based on identified needs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Here's What You Need:
High school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are highly preferred.
Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, CPS registry check and education/degree verification required.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Knowledge of public assistance programs, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medical Assistance, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Ability to work evenings and weekends representing the department at various community events required
- Strong computer skills (Virginia Department of Social Services automated systems, Microsoft
- Office Suite, and database applications)
- Consistent excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to serve a culturally diverse community
- Superior planning and organizational skills
- The ability to communicate tactfully, and efficiently, both orally and in writing
- Good basic math skills
- The ability to make decisions independently
- The ability to compile reports and analyze data

This position will require you to be able to multitask. You must learn and share knowledge about the resources available for Chesterfield and Colonial Heights citizens. Much of your job will be networking with community partners and engaging department program staff to understand customer needs to help guide resource development. You will also participate in community events, and meetings, and give presentations to community members.
Monday - Friday; 8:30am - 5:00pm.
This position is required to serve on an emergency shelter team during times of natural disaster.
Salary : $55,278 - $64,952
