Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or related field and one year of experience in Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment/environmental sampling; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants with an Associate’s degree and two years of industrial wastewater pretreatment or sampling experience will be considered.  Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local regulations related to industrial wastewater discharge. Knowledge of the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) program. Knowledge of environmental sampling, field testing, and monitoring. Knowledge of computers and related software applications. Ability to read sewer plans, maps and blueprints. Must be willing to work outdoors with exposure to all types of weather, traffic and hazardous substances. Ability to lift up to sixty (60) pounds and maneuver manhole covers on a daily basis. Good oral/written communication, interpersonal and public relations skills. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.  This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.


Operate, set up, secure, calibrate and maintain sampling devices. Collect wastewater samples following the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) approved methods, using appropriate chain of custody, containers, preservation techniques and holding times. Maintain sampling records, review laboratory reports and enter sampling data into database to track compliance progress. Inspect food service establishments (restaurants, commercial kitchens and food manufacturers) for compliance and prepare inspection reports. Inspect pretreatment devices such as grease traps and interceptors. Enforce the Chesterfield County Department of Utilities Sewer Ordinance concerning FOG pretreatment. Prepare and issue enforcement notices of non-compliance and other correspondence. Educate kitchen staff and owner/managers on proper disposal and handling of FOG and other non-compliance issues. Performs Industrial inspection and illicit discharge investigations, database management and field investigations. Performs other work as required.  This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

Salary : $47,412 - $64,005
