Position Overview
Perform and oversee work in the areas of:
- Plan, direct, and coordinate daily operations of the Produce Department
- Meet sales, gross, and labor goals
- Department scheduling and time card approval
- Staff recruitment, orientation, and training
- Workplace safety
- Basic maintenance and repairs
These tasks are important to the company because they promote Chester’s mission, customer satisfaction, employee happiness, successful vendor relations, and company profitability.
Although many Essential Functions are performed according to established procedures, independent decisions will have to be made.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee activities directly relating to customer service and the customer experience
- Direct and coordinate activities of department production, pricing, and sales
- Review performance data and assess goal achievement to determine areas needing improvement
- Managing staff, overseeing work schedules, and assigning specific duties
- Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures
- Communicating issues with subordinates and superiors as necessary
- Determine staffing requirements, interview, hire, and oversee training of new employees
- Work with other managers in planning and directing promotional activities
- Oversee the workplace safety in the Produce Department
- Knowledge of departmental mechanical systems, monitoring and basic maintenance of equipment
- Perform Essential Produce Clerk Job Functions (below)
Produce Clerks work products from the stockroom, onto the sales floor: fill shelves, end bases, and aisle stacks. Grocery clerks will also return the unused products to the stockroom in an orderly way to reduce shrink and aid the ordering process. Freight clerks will be responsible for keeping their working areas clean and free of debris.
Essential Job Functions
- Answer customers' questions about merchandise and advise customers on merchandise selection.
- Pack and unpack items to be stocked on shelves in stockrooms, or sales floor.
- Stock shelves, racks, cases, bins, and tables with new or transferred merchandise.
- Store items in an orderly and accessible manner in warehouses, supply rooms, or other areas.
- Mark stock items using identification tags, and order tags as needed.
- Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas in order to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Clean display cases, shelves, and aisles.
- Determine proper storage methods, identification, and stock location based on turnover, environmental factors, and physical capabilities of facilities.
- Keep records on the use and/or damage of stock or stock handling equipment.
- Examine and inspect stock items for wear or defects, reporting any damage to supervisors.
- Keep aisles and end-bases clean and faced.
- Provide assistance or direction to other stockroom workers.
- Keep records on the use and/or damage of stock or stock handling equipment.
Non-essential Job Functions
- Take inventory or examine merchandise to identify items to be reordered or replenished.
- Verify inventory computations by comparing them to physical counts of stock, and investigate discrepancies or adjust errors.
- Order merchandise from suppliers based on available space, merchandise on hand, customer demand, or advertised specials.
- Compare merchandise invoices to items actually received to ensure that shipments are correct.
