POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the City Supervisor, the public works laborer is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position is responsible for filling in where needed in the departments of the City of Chetopa.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Reads electric and water meters and records readings;
· Turns electric and water services on and off;
· Turns customers electric and water services off for non-payment;
· Inspects for damaged equipment and improper operations;
· Operates and maintains departmental equipment and machinery;
· Works with general public;
· Picks up ordered parts for necessary repairs to departmental equipment when needed;
· Cleans shop area;
· Operates departmental equipment including bucket trucks;
· Assists with lift stations and motors;
· Assists with the removal of damaged and defective material in city roads;
· Assists with repairing potholes, utility cuts, overlays and compaction for asphalt or other road surface types;
· Places and removes warning signs, cones, barricades and flashing lights as needed;
· Repairs and installs street and traffic signs;
· Paints crosswalks, shoulder lines and stop bars;
· Loads and unloads sand, dirt, asphalt, rock, straw and other materials as needed;
· Performs mowing duties;
· Picks up dead animals when needed;
· Performs curbside refuse collection duties;
· Delivers trash and refuse containers;
· Operates departmental equipment including trucks and heavy equipment when trained.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
· Assists in all departments as needed;
· Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
PUBLIC WORKS LABORER POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Entry level position. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.
Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. This position requires a valid Kansas Driver’s License with a Class B CDL or the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days of hiring.
Technical Skills: A working knowledge of department maintenance and repairs, traffic signs and markings. This employee must be able to efficiently operate trucks, tractors, air compressors and other department equipment. The ability to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to complete and check forms and documents, to understand and anticipate problems and the read and interpret maps, reports and written instructions.
Supervision: This employee will work under the supervision of the City Supervisor.
Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisory personnel is expected.
Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heights, excessive noise and all types of weather conditions is expected. This position contains an element of risk to personal safety and personal protective equipment is to be utilized when required.
