What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Groundskeeper position at Cheverus High School?
Position Status: Full-time; 12 months, salaried, non-exempt, entitled to overtime.
Work schedule: Monday-Friday with weekends and vacation weeks depending upon the Athletics schedule.
Reports to: Director of Athletics for all Fall and Spring Field Preparations for games and matches. Reports to and Director of Physical Plant in Winter and Summer for all mowing, fertilization, equipment repair and winter snow removal.
Duties:
- Assumes primary responsibility for the care of all natural grass turf, beam clay infields, and 400 meter outdoor track including field event spaces (long jump, pole vault, discus, shot put, and long jump areas within the athletic fencing areas behind and to the side of 271 Ocean Avenue and 963 Washington Avenue (including tennis area across footbridge).
- Coordinates with Director of Physical Plant and, when appropriate executes season opening tasks including: setting of seasonal water meters, clearing of irrigation lines, opening of water service to mens and womens bathrooms that includes service to water hose connections, startup of mowing equipment, weed trimmers, infield grooming machine, field lining paint sprayer, and removal of turf blankets.
- Places orders after purchase order approval for field paint supplies, beam clay, loam, seed, equipment parts, etc.
- Maintain proper licenses and deploy the licensing activities such as fertilizations, weed control, insect treatment.
- Schedule business relationships and place orders after purchase order approval for deep tine aeration services. Ensures compliance with latest City of Portland ordinances and State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection for the dispensing of fertilizers, weed control, and insect treatment products.
- Conducts regular trimming activities on a weekly basis adjustable according to weather patterns. Supervises part-time groundskeeper to assist with same,
- Sets irrigation system controls for natural turf watering schedules for Ocean Avenue and Washington Avenue complexes.
- Coordinates with the Director of Athletics and Activities for field grooming and field lining for varsity and sub-varsity completion areas for Ocean Avenue and Washington Avenue for baseball, softball, lacrosse, outdoor track, football, soccer, field hockey, and cross country. Supervises part-time groundskeeper to assist with the same. Applies loam and seed when necessary.
- Assist the Director of Athletics and Activities with weather postponements and stay up to date with weather forecasts
- Notifies Director of Physical Plant when repairs become necessary to irrigation, fencing, netting, bathroom/concession building systems (Ocean Avenue), storage/bathroom building (Washington Avenue).
- Notifies Supervisor and Director of Physical Plant in advance as to natural turf conditions (i.e. excessive water, worn areas, etc. that will require rescheduling, movement, or cancellation of scheduled athletic activities.
- Coordinates with Director of Physical Plant draining/winterizing of irrigation systems and building systems, and final servicing of mowing, weed trimming, infield grooming machine, field spraying equipment as well as the setting of turf blankets.
- Perform snow removal and other duties as specified in winter months by the Director of Physical Plant.
- Performs other duties as directed by supervisor.

High school diploma or GED
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have at time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Maine Driver License.
