- Work independently and autonomously at assigned biospecimen collection locations including skilled nursing facilities, long-term care facilities, and patient homes.
- Performs field phlebotomy (venipuncture, capillary and heel sticks) and specimen collection on all patient types according to established laboratory procedures.
- Labels all specimens per established laboratory procedures. Properly identifies all patients per laboratory/hospital policy which conform to the National Patient Safety Guidelines.
- Transport and delivery of biospecimens to the laboratory for analysis in a timely manner according to regulations and policies.
- Communicates with patients and family members in a way that can be easily understood, reassuring patients during the collection process and addressing any concerns they may have.
- Obtains necessary directions regarding specimen collection instructions and post-phlebotomy needs as necessary.
- Performs error free urine drug screen collection as needed and accurately completes all paperwork. Maintains certification for urine drug screen collections on an on-going basis.
- Performs Therapeutic Phlebotomies as needed.
- Participates in new staff training and department onboarding and serving as a resource to other Phlebotomists.
- Acts as a liaison between the client/patient and dispatcher willing to respond to dispatch questions and concerns.
- Monitors and manages inventory of supplies and equipment including expiration dates and restocks as necessary in preparation for route(s).
- Maintains a clean and safe working environment including vehicle maintenance and reporting and organizational infection control protocols and safety regulations.
- Maintains required documentation records and logs meeting all clinical laboratory standards and medical terminology rules and regulations.
- Performs all responsibilities per clinical research standards, including but not limited to IATA, HIPAA, and OSHA.
- I understand that it is not within my scope of practice to handle any medications that I might inadvertently come in contact with, including medications delivered in the pneumatic tube system. If I do come in contact with medications, I know to alert a licensed employee for them to handle.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of hospital and laboratory compliance programs.
- Knowledge of Phlebotomy and Laboratory policies, procedures, and current best practices
- Ability to positively interact with persons of different ethnic, spiritual, moral and cultural beliefs
- Exhibits effective decision-making skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to work independently or as a team while managing time efficiently across multiple locations
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and patient care teams
- High school diploma (or Equivalent Certificate from an accredited program) or higher degree
- Three (3) or more years of inpatient and/or outpatient phlebotomy experience
- Valid USA driver’s license
- Must have clean driving record that follows Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s driving guidelines
- 6 Months: Completion of Cheyenne Regional Preceptor Program within six (6) months of start date
- Cheyenne Regional AHA RQI within 14 calendar days of start
- Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency
- Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course
