As our Lactation Educator RN at CHI Health’s Lakeside Hospital, you'll work with the newborn nursery, labor and delivery staff, and birth center staff as a consultant to mothers that are breastfeeding. You will continue to support the mothers after discharge through telephone consultations, support groups, and post-dismissal follow ups.
To thrive in this role, you’ll need to be informed about community resources for nursing mothers, demonstrate excellent teaching ability and be skilled in communicating verbally as well as in writing.

Responsibilities
As a Lactation Educator RN, you will be responsible for delivering the highest quality patient care. This goes beyond direct patient support and includes involvement in exclusive breastfeeding task forces and community projects.
What You'll Do
- Coordinate care of postpartum patients and NICU families who are breastfeeding; helping nursing mothers with current challenges and potential problems.
- Field follow-up calls for support and guidance from mothers while working in close consultation with nursing staff.
- Act as a resource person for staff providing patient care and serve as a communication link between Maternal Child staff.
- Provide education to new mothers about breastfeeding as well as all maternal child areas.
- Provide backup support to appropriate areas, including Maternal Child Health, Special Care Nursery, and Childbirth Education, within the scope of license.
- Demonstrate leadership in achieving nursing division goals and support Shared Governance structure.
- Acknowledge the value of multicultural traditions and demonstrate this when caring for patients. Must have the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse and multicultural environment.
Qualifications
What You’ll Need
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license that allows you to practice in our state
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required
- Board Certified Lactation Consultant- IBCLC OR Certified Lactation Counselor – CLC required, or progression towards certification to comply with the requirements of the IBCLC. Certification completion not to exceed 1 year from hire.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and two year’s experience in healthcare, preferred
- Additional certification or licensure may be required upon hire
