Position Summary: 
Assisting hockey analytics group with building out foundational statistical models. Candidates will have the opportunity to gain experience with statistical programming and combine quantitative skills with hockey domain knowledge to assist hockey operations decision making.  Successful candidates will also bring strong communication skills, analytical skills, and work ethic.  
  
Key Responsibilities
  • Support development of the Hockey Analytics function to enable efficient, timely, and actionable data-driven decisions that enhance current and future performance across Hockey Operations
  • Build statistical models to evaluate specific aspects of player value and to answer other hockey research questions
  • Cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders that fosters cross-functional collaboration and alignment across Hockey Operations
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders throughout Hockey Operations to formulate hypotheses, analyze data, and effectively deliver insights to optimize player evaluation, player acquisition, player development, roster construction, in-game strategy, and more
  • Work collaboratively with the Hockey Systems team to build informative data visualizations, reports, and other end-use tools for use in automated reports or internal web applications
  • Communicate findings through written reports, presentations, and informal conversations
 
Required Skills & Abilities: 
  • Proficiency with one or more statistical programming languages, preferably Python  
  • Experience with SQL 
  • No previous hockey experience required, but demonstrated interest in hockey preferred 
  • Proficiency with Git is preferred
  • Experience with probabilistic/Bayesian modeling is preferred
  • Experience with spatial modeling is preferred
  
Required Education & Experience: 
  • Current junior or senior, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, or similar discipline  
  • Demonstrable project experience through coursework or personal projects
