JOB DESCRIPTION

Located within the Office of Teaching and Learning (T&L), the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Digital Learning (CIDL) oversees the district's comprehensive Pre-K through 12th-grade curriculum and digital ecosystem, Skyline. Skyline includes a wide range of functionality to help support all of the content and instructional needs of every educator and student at Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

Job Summary :

Reporting to the Director of Digital Learning and Libraries, the Digital Learning Design and Instructional GenAI Manager will manage the digital learning vision for the Office of T&L, collaborating with colleagues across CIDL, Information and Technology Services, and other CPS teams to support the development and execution of the district’s instructional GenAI (generative artificial intelligence) strategy. This position will proactively and holistically guide the development, integration, and transformation of the district’s Digital Learning Environment to ensure that the district meets and maintains its responsibility to provide universal access to high-quality curriculum, meaningful assessments, and research-based academic interventions in a safe and secure environment, as articulated in the Continuous Improvement and Data Transparency Policy. Additionally, the Digital Learning Design and Instructional GenAI Manager will engage with district-wide and national stakeholders to stay abreast of trends in instructional technology innovation and will collaborate with internal teams to develop paths for the selection, purchase, and utilization of innovative instructional technology resources.

Responsibilities :

Digital Learning Environment Design

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of the district’s Digital Learning Environment (DLE) based on Universal Design for Learning, accessibility, user experience / user interface design (UX / UI), and cognitive load reduction.
  • Oversee all protocols and policies for DLE design.
  • Manage the development of roadmaps, use cases, and workflows aligned to the DLE vision for key stakeholders including but not limited to : teachers, school leaders, students, families, curriculum designers, professional learning specialists.
  • Manage the creation and maintenance of testing plans, implementation project plans, and error resolution for the DLE.
  • Establish continuous improvement processes to ensure the DLE is iterative and evolving in alignment with District strategies and academic goals.
  • Ensure that the design of the DLE protects licensed content and intellectual property rights.
  • Manage stakeholder feedback on DLE design, including but not limited to input from teachers, school leaders, students, families, curriculum designers, and professional learning staff.
  • Manage DLE load time reduction to improve the usability of the instructional, assessment, and intervention-based resources.
  • Ensure that DLE partners adhere to standards for integration and interoperability and participate in our district SSO and rostering solution and / or platform.
  • Manage the technical standardization of all academic standards in the Digital Learning Environment under CASE (Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange).
  • Ensure the standardized formatting for academic standards and district frameworks allows for cross-walking, metadata management, data analytics, interdisciplinary design, and equitable grading practices.
  • Ensure that the district’s universal curriculum, assessment, and intervention-based resources are compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards.
  • Ensure that the metadata affiliated with the district’s universal curriculum, assessment, and intervention-based resources is kept up-to-date.

Instructional GenAI

  • Collaborate closely with the Manager, Enterprise GenAI in ITS to ensure alignment with ITS and district protocol, vision, and approach to GenAI at CPS.
  • Develop a 5-year instructional GenAI roadmap in partnership with genAI leaders in ITS and the Director of Digital Learning & Libraries.
  • Apply state-of-the-art training, tuning, inference, tools, and deployment methods to maximize the performance of instructional, assessment, and intervention-based resource creation models.
  • Define and articulate the challenges and opportunities that generative AI creates for classroom-based instruction and assessment.
  • Engage with central and network office and school-based instructional leaders looking to incorporate generative AI into their instructional practices.
  • Support the development, implementation, and execution of GenAI instructional strategy to achieve the organization's academic outcomes.
  • Lead the analysis of market trends in educational technology to determine their potential impact on the district’s academic strategy.
  • Effectively guide external Digital Learning Environment vendors in implementing the instructional GenAI strategy.
  • Develop a model for instructional, assessment, and intervention-based resource creation through generative AI that accounts for generative quality, intellectual property protection, and student data privacy and security.
  • Oversee and / or support the governance of GenAI principles and framework(s) to ensure compliance with the instructional GenAI strategy.
  • Leverage user interface design for out-of-school access to high-quality learning materials for families and students.
  • Track and apply existing, new, and emerging innovative GenAI technologies anchored in instructional best practices to assess their potential.
  • Other duties and workstreams as assigned.
  • Qualifications : Education Required :

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Relevant certifications in systems interoperability, responsible AI, Large Language Models, and GenAI Applications preferred.
  • Experience Required :

  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in educational and / or instructional technology.
  • Operational oversight and development of educational technology systems and processes.
  • Experience working with or leading work in Digital Learning, Educational Technology, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, or Artificial Intelligence in an educational setting.
  • Experience leading digital learning systems and AI Pilot design, development, and implementation in an educational setting.
  • Experience setting the vision for Digital Learning, Instructional Technology, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, or Artificial Intelligence in an educational setting strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

  • Deep understanding of Universal Design for Learning, accessibility, user experience / user interface design (UX / UI), cognitive load reduction.
  • Deep understanding of generative AI, including the ability to describe the key steps in a typical Large Language Model (LLM)-based generative AI lifecycle.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead, influence, and build consensus among cross-departmental stakeholders.
  • Ability to articulate a vision, set high standards, and effectively guide teams.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with a variety of educationally diverse teams.
  • Effective strategic planning capabilities.
  • Proficient in GenAI methodologies, standards, practices, governance, reference patterns.
  • Knowledge of IMS Global standards, particularly OneRoster and visualization programs.
  • Knowledge of WCAG standards and IL Learning Standards.

  • Establish / Maintain Chicago Residency : Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date.
