OBJECTIVE AND POSITION SUMMARY
The Shelter Driver ensures safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for shelter residents, including medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, and transportation during suspension periods. This role also supports the shelter’s operations by assisting with general tasks and stepping into other roles as needed.
SPECIALIZATIONS
- Skilled in safe vehicle operation and adherence to traffic laws and safety protocols
- Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, including medically fragile clients
- Accurate documentation of transportation activities, including trip logs and incident reports
- Preparedness to address medical or vehicular emergencies with calm and efficient responses
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate the shelter shuttle for medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, and suspension-related transport
- Follow established schedules and respond to ad-hoc transport requests as directed by management
- Assist residents with boarding and ensure all safety measures, including seatbelt use, are followed
- Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and report maintenance issues promptly
- Prioritize the needs of medically fragile residents and follow established protocols for their transport
- Respond to emergencies during transport by contacting emergency services and shelter management as needed
- Ensure the safe handover of residents to medical personnel or return to the shelter
- Maintain detailed logs of trips, including dates, times, residents transported, and purpose of transport
- Document incidents and report them to the associate director or direct supervisor.
- Provide assistance in other shelter functions as needed, including administrative tasks or resident supervisor
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Education /Background:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Obtain City Operators Permit
- High School Diploma or GED and two (2) progressive years of experience in general office procedures and customer service and driving
