Position Description Summary
The Behavior Specialist is responsible for coordinating and ensuring the implementation of comprehensive behavioral services in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), and other federal, state, and local requirements.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Plans and coordinates behavioral health services for children and their families in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), and other federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Conducts a file reviews and classroom observations when a Request for Intervention (RFI) has been received, and maintains up-to-date files of children with behavioral interventions.
  • Conducts Parent interviews to gather information.
  • Supports the development of a Behavior Success Plan (BSP) for children with challenging behaviors in collaboration with the Mental Health Consultants (MHCs), Inclusion Specialist, and parents/guardians.
  • Reviews BSPs for children with challenging behaviors with the parents, teaching staff, and other applicable service areas as needed to receive input and obtain signatures before implementation.
  • Monitor and evaluate plans to measure effectiveness and recommend continuous improvement.
  • Provides classroom support and models appropriate adult-child interactions for teachers in collaboration with the Early Childhood Education Specialists/Managers.
  • Initiates and provides follow ups for community referrals, and collaborates with local agencies for referrals.
  • Coordinates transitions and treatment plans with other community agencies as necessary.
  • Attend Multi-Disciplinary team meetings as necessary, Child and Family Review (CFR) meetings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and other meetings as necessary for the coordination of services.
  • Serves as an advocate for children with behavior concerns on various community associations/agencies planning committees and boards.
  • Provides behavioral-related materials/resources in order to assist parents and staff with the understanding of specific behaviors.
  • Collaborates with other State and Federal Specialists to remain current on any new federal policy changes.
  • Works with the Health Services Director to develop and update the behavior-related policies and procedures in accordance with the HSPPS, federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality on issues concerning program and staff.
  • Participates, coordinates, or conducts a variety of meetings, staff development, committees, training, workshops, and/or conferences in order to present materials and information concerning department programs, services, and operations, and activities;
  • Represents the agency at local, regional, and state meetings, conferences, in-services, boards, councils, and events.
  • Completes monthly reports and submit to Supervisor
  • Provides training and technical assistance (TTA) for staff and parents in parenting, discipline, and other behavioral issues.
  • Perform other work-related and/or duties as assigned (e.g., staff and parent training, write newsletters).


Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Must possess knowledge/use of strategies to access and/or monitor a variety of community resources for individuals with disabilities knowledge of diverse ethnic groups.


Required
Experience
  • Two years of experience in Mental Health and Day Treatment with children.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Education, Certifications, Licenses
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Services, Special Education, Social Work, Psychology or Sociology.


Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
