What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cafeteria Assistant Manager position at Child Nutrition?
Primary Purpose:
Supervise, train, and manage campus food service operation. Ensure that appropriate quantities of food are prepared and served. Manage and control labor hours as assigned by required budget set by administration. Follow required food safety requirements by local health department and HACCP Food Safety Plan required by Texas Department of Agriculture.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma
- Food Manager Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and appliances used in food preparation
- Ability to manage personnel
- Effective planning and organizational skills
Experience:
- Minimal three years experience in institutional food service operations
- Completion of Food Manager Certification course before or during first year as manager.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Produce and maintain required production records, work schedules, cleaning schedules, and monitor labor hours.
- Direct activities in kitchen and cafeteria.
- Maintain all serving schedules and serve all food items according to menu specifications defined by departmental policies and procedures.
- Work cooperatively with Child Nutrition Director and campus principal to accommodate temporary schedule changes, special serving requirements, and to resolve personnel problems.
- Cashier/Train Cashiers- Follow Public School Nutrition Policy and Texas Department of Agriculture requirements to count and claim breakfast and lunch meals on point of sale system.
- Use Sales Activity Report to reconcile cash register drawer for each meal period. Accurately complete bank deposits in timely manner.
Policy, Reports, and Law
- Ensure that food is produced safely and is of high quality according to policies, procedures, and department requirements and meets Texas Public School Nutrition Policy.
- Maintain accurate reports of daily and monthly financial, production, and activity records.
- Maintain and submit accurate information for payroll reporting (time cards, tardiness, and absenteeism).
Safety
- Ensure that food items are stored in safe and hazard-free environment.
- Establish and enforce standards of cleanliness, health, and safety following health and safety codes, regulations, and following HACCP Food Safety Plan.
- Maintain safe work environment.
Inventory and Equipment
- Ensure that appropriate quantities of food and supplies are available through daily orders and weekly and monthly inventories.
- Maintain logs on all equipment maintenance required within campus food service department.
- Perform preventive maintenance and report needed equipment repairs.
- Recommend replacement of existing equipment to meet department needs.
- Conduct annual physical equipment and supplies inventory.
Other
- Help screen, select, and train cafeteria workers and make sound recommendations about the assignment, discipline, and retention of cafeteria personnel.
- Communicate with students, CISD staff, parents, and visitors in a positive professional manner regarding meal account balances, ringing up ala carte sales, imputing meals into point of sale system during meal periods and catering functions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Work with Cafeteria Manager to supervise and evaluate food service workers assigned to campus cafeteria.
Equipment Used:
Large and small kitchen equipment and tools including electric slicer, mixer, pressure steamer, sharp cutting tools, oven, dishwasher, and food and utility cart.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, walking, pushing, and pulling; moderate lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, some stooping, bending, and kneeling; limited exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
