Children's Aid is the lead partner for the Curtis High School Community School initiative in Staten Island. Through this partnership, we offer a robust array of resources to promote the academic success, health, and emotional well-being of our students and families.

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Program Director, Success Mentors and Tutors serves a caseload of students who need additional academic support. The position focuses on math, science, literacy, math, and attendance concerns.

This is a part-time position working 20 - 25 hours per week, 4 - 5 hours per day – when DOE schools are in session.

Essential Duties: 

  • Understand and promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures
  • Provide personalized academic support to students in grades 9-12, assisting with homework, assignments, projects, study strategies, and exam preparation
  • Assist program staff in organizing and facilitating school-wide activities
  • Encourage students to engage in other program activities and utilize available resources
  • Actively participate in weekly team meetings, supervision sessions, and trainings
  • Collaborate with Department of Education (DOE) staff to communicate with parents about attendance, performance, improvement, and effort
  • Offer one-on-one support to students regarding attendance, academic performance, and effort
  • Communicate any issues affecting students' academic performance and attendance to the Program Director and Community School Director
  • Implement attendance improvement interventions for students identified as chronically absent
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associate's degree required, Bachelor’s preferred 
  • 2-3 years of experience in youth development, with proficiency in Science and Math subjects

Competencies:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team within a school community

The incumbent is expected to work a schedule, whether in-person or hybrid, as determined by the department's needs to facilitate effective collaboration with the team.  This flexibility is essential for maintaining seamless communication, fostering teamwork, and ensuring the smooth operation of the department's processes.  The position's requirements are subject to periodic review and adjustment based on organizational needs and changes in work dynamics.
