Job Description
Upon completion of the one year pediatric neurosurgery fellowship, the fellow is expected to reach the following goals: 1. Develop a high level of technical expertise in managing routine and complex pediatric neurosurgical cases. This includes intracranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve pathologies. 2. Familiar routine perioperative management of common neurosurgical diseases. 3. Familiar with nonsurgical cases, frequently referred to the neurosurgeon in an outpatient basis and their management. 4. Have developed a familiarity and comfort level with the management of acute pediatric neurosurgical cases, as frequently seen in the emergency room, trauma departments. 5. Have developed a solid, broad-based knowledge of pediatric neurosurgical problems, with the minimal requirement that the written board exam as given by the Pediatric Neurosurgical Fellowship, is easily passed. Research Component of Fellowship: If the fellow has a strong bench/lab research interest, this could be accommodated through Emory University, Georgia Tech, Morehouse, and/or the CDC. Research time would be under the guidance of one of the pediatric neurosurgery attendings or one of the Emory University faculty members.

- In keeping with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships, all applicants must have the following, a degree of Doctor Medicine.
- Completed and accredited neurosurgical residency program
- Obtained a valid, current Georgia medical license prior to beginning the fellowship
- A degree of Doctor Medicine
- Completed and accredited neurosurgical residency program

- No minimally required knowledge, skills, or abilities
- Authorized to provide patient care under the supervision of an Active member of Children’s Professional Staff.
- The fellow has the following prerogatives:
- Attends hospital patients admitted by a Professional Staff member(s) to whom he/she has been assigned.
- Performs those clinical duties consistent with the privileges held by the Professional Staff member responsible for the patient’s care and to whom he/she is assigned.
- Serves on Professional Staff and hospital committees as designated by the Professional Staff Leadership and SVPMA.
- Attends Children’s educational programs, meetings of the assigned service and other assigned meetings of the staff.
- The fellow has the following responsibilities:
- Maintains responsibility, within the scope of current professional competence, for the care and supervision of assigned patients.
- Provides the patients with care at the generally recognized professional level of quality and efficiency established for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
- Writes orders for treatment or implements the plan of treatment under the direction of the Professional Staff member responsible for the child’s care. For inpatient cases, the attending physician is required to consult and co-sign orders written by the fellow within 24 hours. For outpatient cases, the attending physician is required to co-sign orders written by the fellow.
- Abides by the policies and procedures of Children’s and the Rules and Regulations of the Professional Staff.
- Abides by the ethical principles of his/her profession.
- Participates in the quality management/improvement activities of Children’s.
- The fellow will be expected to share call with the attending neurosurgeons. He/she will manage his/her own "mini service" and be responsible for: admission and discharge of patients; operative management - with help and guidance of one of the attendings.
- During the clinical fellowship at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta/Emory University, the fellow will be exposed to an extensive operative volume. He/she will receive training in the following:
- The surgical management of common neurosurgical problems, such as hydrocephalus, spina bifida, craniofacial malformations, and brain tumors.
- In addition, more specialized training will be given within the discipline of pediatric neurosurgery. This includes special training in the following areas:
- Brachial plexus surgery
- Surgical treatment of medically intractable seizures - hemispherectomies, corpus callosotomies, vagal nerve stimulators, etc.
- Pediatric radiosurgery using the Gamma knife
- The use of intraoperative MRIs
- The use of intraoperative microscope
- The use of surgical adjuncts such as intraoperative neuronavigation, intraoperative electrocorticography and brain mapping, and spinal cord monitoring
- Participates in the following outpatient clinics/meetings: Multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic; Multidisciplinary spina bifida clinic; Seizure surgery clinic and conference; Neurosurgery; and Pediatric neurosurgery conference/journal club
- Upon completion of the fellowship, every major topic in pediatric neurosurgery will be discussed with the fellow by one of the attendings.
- Education – fellow to submit two papers for publication during fellowship year.
- Nighttime and Weekend Call Duties for the Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellow: Pediatric neurosurgery fellow will rotate call with the attending.
