Job Description

Certified Peer Specialist - Parent (CPS-P) services are geared toward promoting self-empowerment of the child / adolescent and families presenting to our emergency departments for behavioral mental health concerns. The team member focuses on building respectful partnerships with families, identifying the needs of the child / adolescent, and helping them recognize self-efficacy while strengthening good communication within the families and good partnerships with communities.

The Parent Peer Support Specialist performs the service within the scope of their knowledge, lived experience, and education. The position involves engaging individuals, providing linkage to community resources, assisting with discharge planning, and providing direct services and may include sharing one's own personal journey to encourage and inspire others as they continue on their own recovery journey.

Experience

  • Certified Peer Specialist or certified within three months of hire
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing to a diverse population and ensure and confirm transfer of knowledge
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Job Responsibilities

    Work closely with parents / guardians to do the following :

  • Assist them in gaining skills to promote the recovery process (self-advocacy, developing natural supports, etc.).
  • Support, model, and coach to help with their level of engagement in all health-related processes.
  • Cultivate their ability to make informed, independent choices which will include others who have been through similar experiences.
  • Assist them in understanding the various system processes and how these relate to the youth's recovery process and the value of the parent / guardian role.
  • Help them to understand what a behavioral mental health diagnosis means and what a journey to recover may look like.
  • Guide them in understanding the role of prescribed services and medication in diminishing / managing the symptoms of the condition while increasing resilience and functioning in living with the condition.
  • Connect them to behavioral mental health resources.
  • Help them to identify the importance of self-care, addressing the need to maintain family whole health and wellness in order to ultimately support their child / loved one.
