Job Description
The Grossing Technician is responsible for the accuracy of pathology services requiring specialized techniques. Works independently using medical knowledge to perform human specimen examinations (biopsies, lower complexity, and bio respiratory specimens) for diagnosis and patient treatment under the direction of the Pathologist and/or Pathologist Assistant. Receives and processes specimens from throughout the organization and manages them and/or slide handling referred to an external laboratory. Coordinates the workflow to meet patient care requirements and provide satisfactory turnaround time of tests. Oversees the accession of specimens. Acts as primary point of contact in Anatomic Pathology for the operating room and other clinical procedure areas for answering questions about specimens or orders. Acts as the primary communicator between pathologist and clinical areas during intraoperative analysis procedures. Performs cryotomoy and/or touch preparation on specimens requiring intraoperative analysis under the supervision of the Pathologist and/or Pathologist Assistant. Oversees and maintains supplies, equipment, and instruments for Pathology. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Experience
- No minimum experience required.
- Two year of Pathology laboratory experience
- Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology required. Degree must include minimally 60 semester hours or equivalent that includes either:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
- 24 semester hours – 6 chemistry, 6 biology AND 12 chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology in any combination
- Associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology required. Degree must include minimally 60 semester hours or equivalent that includes either:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
- 24 semester hours – 6 chemistry, 6 biology AND 12 chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology in any combination
- No professional certifications required.
- Ability to travel to multiple hospital campuses as needed.
- Detail oriented, initiative-taking, possess excellent time management & organizational skills.
- Ability to learn the current pathology laboratory principles and procedures.
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to learn, interpret and stay current standard laboratory safety procedure, manuals, procedures, which comply with regulations, policies, procedures, and/or guidelines imposed by regulatory and government agencies (i.e., College of American Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, The Joint Commission, & DNV, etc.).
- Ability to learn gross analysis of surgical specimens.
- Ability to learn basic pathology, anatomy, and histology.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Ability to multi-task and take direction while using independent judgement to coordinate and meet multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and security compliance.
- Process test requests with accompanying specimens and enter orders as required.
- Assure appropriate specimen identification and accessioning.
- Describe gross anatomic features including the overall specimen dimensions, structures, size, and appearance; dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for processing according to established protocols and procedures in conjunction with the Pathologist/Pathologist Assistant.
- Assign biorepository identifications by diagnoses.
- Organize and maintain both frozen and Formalin-Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) specimens in the bio respiratory.
- Prepare and perform gross tissue for frozen sections or touch preps.
- Utilize slide scanner to create a whole slide image (additional slides upon request).
- Collect and organize slides, scrolls, blocks, or frozen specimens and oversee the handling of specimens/slides referred to external Laboratory.
- Assure proper maintenance equipment and cleanliness of the Pathology lab and grossing stations/rooms.
- Dispose biological waste safely and properly.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and store in proper location.
- Maintains quality control/assurance activities and records.
- Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
- Performs other duties as required by the department.
