What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Peer Advocate position at Children's Home?
Who We Are: The Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference partners with children, families and communities throughout New York State to inspire hope, develop skills and cultivate healthy relationships for positive futures.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a Family Peer Advocate for the Sullivan County Youth ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) program, you have the opportunity to work as part of a team that helps families with children ages 10-21 avoid hospitalizations and out-of-home placements by providing skills and support to youth and families to meet all of their needs and overcome their challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the entire Youth ACT team to provide intensive community-based services to youth and families
- Participate in Youth ACT model training
- Participate in professional development opportunities within the agency
- Encourage caregivers to advocate for themselves and their children
- Perform outreach and provide resource information
- Collaborate with caregivers to build skills/parenting toolkit
- Encourage collaboration and a whole family approach
- Create a safe environment for transparency
- Assist to teach self-care and coping strategies
- Build community connections
EXPERIENCE:
- To meet the requirements for the NYS Family Peer Advocate credential, individuals must have "lived experience" as a primary caregiver who has navigated child-serving systems to advocate for their child(ren).
- Some examples of child serving systems: IEP, 504 plans, Child Protective services, Foster Care or Adoption services, Juvenile Justice System, Mental health services, housing services
EDUCATION:
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
- NYS Family Peer Advocate credential is required within 30 days of employment. The Children's Home will support employees to obtain the required credentials.
- Must have valid Driver's License and ability to maintain insurance throughout employment.
