Job Overview

The Medical Interpreter Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating Medical Interpretation programs or activities that advance the services of the department and the provision of high-quality language access to patients and families. Collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare team to advocate for and ensure that high-quality language access is being provided to patients and families.

Shift: M-F 8:30 - 5p, may include other day time hours as needed

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION – High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • EXPERIENCE – Spoken and written fluency in Spanish, English or other foreign language with a minimum of a combination of three (3) years of translation/interpretation experience.
    • Professional level of Spanish Proficiency
  • CERTIFICATION(S) – Certified as a Bridging the Gap (BTG) Medical Interpreter or equivalent is required at the time of hire.
Responsibilities

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

No direct patient care, but will provide interpretive services to patients and families of all ages.

Essential Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Assists in and coordinates the design, development and implementation of short- and long-term plans for programs and performance objectives that enhance the language access services provided for patients and families; monitors progress and evaluates overall performance to assure desired outcomes are met.
  • Provides education to healthcare staff, patients and families, and the community regarding the scope of Medical Interpreter services, the impact of healthcare on development, providing developmentally appropriate and emotionally safe medical care, and professional boundaries.
  • Coordinates quality improvement and/or professional development, including opportunities for medical interpreter/translator certification.
  • Provides support and guidance to team members regarding various programs and/or projects. Encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of departmental resources and the planning and facilitation of special events.
  • Participates in departmental, divisional and/or organizational committees and projects as assigned; may serve in lead or chair capacity.
  • Develops and presents comprehensive reports related to ongoing programs. Responsible for data abstraction, outcome analysis and dissemination of information. Identifies areas of improvement and recommends solutions.

Guidelines: Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.

Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.

Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Under managerial direction, the employee has personal accountability for carrying out the work objectives of an organizational unit or section within the scope of established guidelines and the mission of the organization or department. Employee is expected to resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work. Work may be discussed with higher level supervisors and reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $50,911.60 to $76,367.40

Hourly Salary Range: $24.48 to $36.72
