Job Overview

The Pharmacy Purchasing Agent is primarily responsible for the purchasing functions within a pharmacy including procurement of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies, vendor negotiation and contract compliance. This position also spends a portion of time performing the job duties of a Pharmacy Technician; under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital pharmacy operations

In addition to fulfilling all duties related to Pharmacy purchasing, this team member will be trained in all operational aspects of inpatient pharmacy and will be expected to staff occasionally as a front-line technician when warranted by departmental need.

Department Name: South Campus Pharmacy

Hours per Week: 40, eligible for benefits

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30pm. Shift times may vary based on the needs of the department. No weekend or holiday commitments.

  • This is a hybrid position, with the flexibility to have one day per week to work remotely.
  • This position will support multiple CHCO locations in the Denver Metro

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION – High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • EXPERIENCE – Two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience
  • EQUIVALENCY – Completion of pharmacy technician program may substitute for one (1) year of the experience requirement.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) –
    • State of Colorado Pharmacy Technician (PHAT) Certification
    • Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA)

  • Essential Functions

    An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
    • Procures pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies from wholesalers and vendors. Places orders for supplies from materials management as needed.
    • Assesses drug and supply orders for accuracy and resolves missing or lost orders. Communicates shipping information to staff, if needed.
    • Ensures compliance with approved contracts and responsible for managing vendor relations. Negotiates with pharmaceutical vendors the availability, deliveries, services and other related matters.
    • Receives, verifies and stores incoming pharmaceuticals, and supplies in accordance with hospital and department policy, and regulatory requirements. Coordinates the transfer of pharmaceuticals, and supplies between sites.
    • Assesses and adjusts inventory levels and rotates inventory as necessary. Identifies and resolves supply inventory discrepancies and issues.
    • Assists the Director of Pharmacy in evaluating vendor performance and pharmaceutical expenditures.
    • Assists the Pharmacy Revenue Program Manager, 340B Program Manager or Coordinator, and pharmacy leadership to maintain 340B program compliance.
    • Assists pharmacy leadership in management of drug shortages.
    • Assists in development, recommendation, and implementation of policies and procedures related to pharmaceuticals purchasing.
    • Coordinates the transfer of pharmaceuticals, and supplies between sites.
    • Teaches, trains and/or mentors new employees, students and other healthcare professionals according to standard operating procedures.
    • Supports and coordinates quality and safety initiatives and practices in the department and throughout the hospital as related to job functions.
    • Sustains quality and safety initiatives and practices in the department and throughout the hospital. Reports adverse drug events and medication variances using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS).
    • Assists with the maintenance of the medication barcoding system.
    • Maintains environmental cleanliness of the pharmacy warehouse in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements. Ensures warehouse medication shelves and storage areas are clean, neat and well organized.
    • Performs general duties of a pharmacy technician including but not limited to;
      • Prepares unit-dose nonhazardous and hazardous medications and drug supplies for dispensing as directed by a licensed pharmacist
      • Restocks and delivers medications to patient care areas or clinics, as assigned, including automated dispensing machines; assists in resolving discrepancies
      • Prepares non-parenteral nonhazardous and hazardous medications for dispensing including controlled substances; delivers medications

    Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

    Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.

    Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

    Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

    Salary Information

    Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $48,962.61 to $73,443.91

    Hourly Salary Range: $23.54 to $35.31
