A Brief Overview
Hardy High School students will participate in a career-connected Externship program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This initiative will provide students with opportunities for career exploration across three distinct pathways: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Sterile Processing Technologist (CPD), and Digital Technology Services (DTS). Participants will gain hands-on experience in clinical, operational, and administrative roles related to these professions.

Sterile Processing Technician Externship:
What You Will Do
- Participate in the decontamination process, including receiving, sorting, and cleaning contaminated instruments and equipment.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness and functionality, identifying any damage or defects.
- Assemble instrument trays and sets according to established protocols and surgical specifications.
- Properly package and label instruments and sets for sterilization.
- Operate sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves and Sterrad systems, ensuring proper parameters are met.
- Monitor sterilization processes and maintain accurate records.
- Store and distribute sterile supplies and equipment to various departments.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to infection control guidelines.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient workflow.
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- related healthcare, medical record, and/or medical office experience (Preferred proficiency)
- Obtain and record vital signs and growth measurements (Preferred proficiency)
