Children’s Institute for Learning Differences (CHILD) is 501(c)(3) non-profit agency located in Renton, Washington.
Our mission is to provide innovative school programs, therapies, and training that promote social, emotional, and academic development for children with special needs. Art/Makerspace Teacher: This is a full-time, year-round position (2080 hours per year). Must be available 7:30-4:30 M-F.
This position is responsible for planning and implementing programming of an inclusive Art /Makerspace program to support the creative, academic, emotional, social, and behavioral growth of students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Specialization or experience in special education, particularly working with students with diverse learning needs and disabilities.
· Positively support the school’s model of care, policies and practices, and work collaboratively in a professional organization.
· Knowledge of different art forms, techniques, and materials, and the ability to adapt and modify art activities to meet individual student needs.
· Understanding of various disabilities and familiarity with strategies and accommodations that support students with special needs in the art classroom.
· Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
· Ability and willingness to collaborate with our Media and Music departments, including both individual and all-school video and live productions.
· Patience, empathy, and a passion for empowering students with special needs through art education.
· Organizational skills to plan and manage individualized lessons, adapt to changing needs, and maintain accurate records.
· Competency using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
· Experience using iMovie, Final Cut or similar video editing tools for video production preferred.
· Able to use strong written and oral communication skills to transfer thoughts and express ideas
· Flexible and adaptable in dealing with new, different, or changing requirements
· Maintain confidentiality and security of information.
· Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develop and implement art lessons that are tailored to meet the needs of students K- 12thgrade with special needs, taking into consideration their individual abilities, interests, and IEP goals.
· Adapt teaching strategies and materials to accommodate various learning styles and disabilities, including but not limited to autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disorders.
· Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages creativity, self-confidence, and positive social interactions among students.
· Provide individualized attention and guidance to students during art activities, offering assistance and adaptations as needed to ensure their success and engagement.
· Incorporate sensory experiences and assistive technologies to facilitate student participation and understanding.
· Collaborate with special education teachers, therapists, and support staff to align art lessons with students' academic, social, and emotional goals.
· Assess student progress through informal observations, portfolios, and formal evaluations, and maintain accurate records of student achievements and challenges.
· Attend IEP meetings and contribute to the development and review of students' IEPs, providing insights and recommendations regarding art-related goals and accommodations.
· Stay informed about current best practices, research, and resources in the field of special education and art education, continuously seeking professional development opportunities.
