Children’s Mercy Graduate Medical Education is a centralized department responsible for Undergraduate Medical Education  (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Continuing Medical Education (CME).  The department establishes, implements and enforces training policies and procedures, supervise the process of program accreditation and provides oversight of a respectful and supportive Resident / Fellow learning and working environment that facilitates patient safety, health care quality and achievement of competence.

Internally, professional development is provided to faculty and others through the Office of Faculty Development .  Library Services assures access the latest medical literature to support clinical decisions and research.

Job responsibilities include :

  • Provide program oversight and serve as Chair of GMEC to ensure trainee program success and accreditation compliance and conducting focused reviews when required.
  • Establish and uphold policies for training programs and present the Annual Institutional review to hospital leadership each year.
  • Oversee and support curriculum development and delivery for learners along the continuum.
  • Assist programs in recruitment of a diverse and high-quality workforce and interact with online systems ADS / NRMP / ERAS as required of the DIO.
  • Engage with trainees through the orientation, curriculum, and graduation processes and support struggling learners when needed.
  • Coach and mentor program directors as well as GME medical directors of DEI, Global Health, QI, and Advocacy.
  • Provide guidance to OFD, CME and Library Services directors and medical directors including engaging in programs like the promotion process and the Clinical Advances in Pediatrics Symposium, and escalating issues when required.
  • Teach clinically, mentor learners and produce scholarship.
  • Represent and advocate for medical education with hospital leadership and engaging with other Chairs about mutual and overlapping initiatives.
  • Represent GME and CM in the recruitment of faculty and philanthropic donors.
  • Assist the Vice Chair / Sr. Administrative Director with department operations and supervision of the departments’ 32 professional staff, 250 trainees and $28 million budget.
  • Represent the UMKC School of Medicine.
  • Sit on UMKC Coordinating Council, participating in School governance, and ensuring hospital compliance with school policies.
  • Support the medical student team with oversight of clerkship and other educational opportunities.
  • Create and maintain a positive learning environment for medical students and visiting residents.

The successful candidate will have :

  • Prior experience as a Program Director / Associate Program Director
  • Academic credibility and the ability to advocate for medical education
  • Track record of academic achievement
  • Emotional Intelligence and good representation skills
  • Understanding of hospital systems and medical school processes
  • Ability to partner with Vice Chair / Administrative Director
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills
  • Additional information about the Department of Graduate Medical Education and Children’s Mercy Kansas City :

  • CM residencies include 124 residents and chiefs in Pediatric or Preliminary Pediatrics, and 3 each Child Neurology and Medicine / Pediatric Residencies each year (UMKC).  The Pediatric Residency has a rolling five-year board passage rate of 97%.
  • CM has 120-130 subspecialty trainees in 45 fellowship programs for physicians, dentists, psychologists, clinical pharmacologists, laboratory geneticists, optometrists, and ethicists. Fellowships are supported by eight centralized program coordinators.  Subspecialty programs have a five-year rolling board passage rate of 93%.
  • Subspecialty training includes a robust centralized curriculum in leadership, research, and quality improvement.
  • CM and GME provides robust wellbeing programs for trainees including dedicated therapist from the hospital’s Employee Assistance Program and a Center for Wellbeing Program Manager.
  • CM is an educational site for 600-700 visiting residents / year from ~60 programs.
  • CM supports Core Pediatric Clerkship rotations for three local schools of medicine : University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC), University of Kansas (KU), Kansas City University (KCU).
  • Elective rotations and research are also completed by over 500 students from at least 50 schools all over the US.
  • The three-person CME team supports ~600 activities per year to over 23,000 learners.
  • The OFD team provides faculty affairs and professional development to over 800 faculty through formalized curriculum and mentorship programs, scholarships to external programs and support for faculty promotion.
  • Library Services has ~28,000 full text articles and nearly as many visits its website. Supported by five library professionals, they perform nearly 500 literature searches per year, support clinical education and a shared public repository of CM scholarly work with 30,000 downloads per year.
  • US News and World Report ranks us near the top in all the categories it measures.
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center awarded us its most prestigious honor, Magnet Designation, for the fifth time in 2020.
  • More than 80 percent of our patients give us a 9 or 10 (10 being best) in quality of care.

  • CM was the first pediatric hospital to be awarded Silver status from the AMA Joy In Medicine recognition program for wellbeing efforts across the organization.
  • Physician candidates should be board-certified or board-eligible in their respective clinical field. PhD Salary and academic rank are commensurate with experience.  Academic appointment will be at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  An additional appointment at the University of Kansas will be acquired if appropriate.
