Department Overview The Child Life group promotes the continuous development of children to optimize their responses to medical care, to minimize psychological stress and trauma, and to increase understanding and coping with illness and health care experiences. Child Life provides children with opportunities for gaining a sense of mastery, for play, for learning, for self-expression, for family involvement and for peer interaction. As members of the health care team, child life staff advocate for children and families in ambulatory and inpatient settings. They serve as resources to all staff and to the community on issues related to child development and child health experiences. Position Summary: The child life internship program provides intense working experience in child life. We place an emphasis on candidates with a strong background in cultural awareness and issues related to equity and diversity. We are interested in supporting students while working from an equity lens, and are committed to educating and supporting students who reflect the diversity of the patients and families we serve. Child life Interns under the supervision of a certified child life specialist (CCLS) will contribute to: the promotion of the continuous development of children, optimizing patients' responses to medical care, to minimize psychological stress and trauma, and to increase coping with illness and health care experiences. The child life intern will function as part of an interdisciplinary, patient- and family-centered model of care, collaborating with the patient & family, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, and other members of the health care team to develop a comprehensive plan of care. Child life interns will develop skills in partnering with families and tailoring individual interventions to meet each child's fear or need around their medical experiences. This is particularly valuable for children who are anxious or struggling to cope with stressful circumstances. The child life intern will contribute to child life department initiatives around non-patient facing work as well. This includes but is not limited to donation management, special event planning, engagement with the community, professional development, etc. This posting is for the Summer 2025 Child Life Internship, which will take place from June to August. Position Responsibilities: Interns will have opportunities to work with patients and families in the following ways: Completing child life assessments, clinical interventions (psychological preparation, medical play, procedural support, grief and loss support, new diagnosis education, teaching coping skills, adjustment to a new acute or chronic health diagnosis, family support, increasing adherence to care plan, etc.), documentation and education for staff and community stakeholders. Interns will complete required readings and assignments, participate in case study discussions and care conferences, attend site visits and school visits, engage with interdisciplinary team members and participate in support groups and/or hospital wide committees.

Qualifications:

Qualifications: Intern must, at minimum, meet academic requirements for certification through ACLP by the end of clinical internship. 1. Bachelor’s degree in any field of study -AND- 2. Coursework: must successfully complete 10 college/university courses as follows: 1) Child life course taught by a CCLS 2) A minimum of 2 child development courses that cover ages birth -18 3) Family systems course 4) Play course 5) Loss/bereavement or death/dying course 6) Research course 7) 3 additional courses in related content areas Competencies/Skills to be developed: By the end of internship, successful child life interns should be eligible to sit for the ACLP child life certification exam and have met the core competencies as outlined by ACLP (https://childlife.org/docs/default-source/certification/internships/internevaluationtool.pdf?sfvrsn=8a9fa14d_4) Must have minimum of 100 hours of experience working with typically developing children as well as experiences working with children in stressful situations and with healthcare needs. Preferred experience in the medical setting. The posted pay range represents rates for a grouping of multiple jobs within a salary grade. We carefully consider a wide range of factors including but not limited to market indicators for the specific role, the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate, and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Children’s Minnesota. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of an occupational health assessment, drug screen, background investigation, and compliance with the U.S. Government Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.
