Our programming serves more than 900,000 participants annually at the Museum, at the Fort Bend Children's Discovery Center, and at the 270 outreach locations across Greater Houston. We welcome families with offerings that include 13 exhibits, a performing arts series, a full slate of cultural programming, science activities led by degreed educators, and weekly Free Family Nights.

Job Summary

As a member of the Visitor Experience Team, the Gallery Assistants plays a critical role in ensuring that all visitors have a positive and welcoming experience. This role is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and overall appearance of the facility, including public areas, restrooms, and other visitor-centric spaces. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to creating a safe and pleasant environment for all guests.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Ensure all public areas, restrooms, and visitor spaces are kept clean, sanitized, and well-maintained throughout the day.
  • Conduct frequent inspections of high-traffic areas to ensure cleanliness standards are consistently met.
  • Clean and restock restrooms regularly, ensuring all supplies (e.g., soap, paper towels, toilet paper) are replenished as needed.
  • Empty trash receptacles and recycling bins and manage the disposal of waste materials in accordance with facility guidelines.
  • Address spills, stains, and other cleanliness issues promptly to prevent hazards and maintain a tidy environment.
  • Respond to visitor inquiries related to facility amenities, cleanliness and programming with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Work closely with the Visitor Experience Team and other departments to ensure that all visitor areas are presentable and ready for use.
  • Follow all safety and sanitation protocols to ensure a clean and safe environment for visitors and staff.
  • Monitor and report inventory levels of cleaning supplies and equipment, ensuring that adequate stock is maintained.
  • Assist with setting up, breaking down, and cleaning event spaces as needed.

Skills And Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and address cleanliness issues quickly.
  • Ability to interact positively with visitors and staff, providing excellent customer service when needed.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Punctual, dependable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle a dynamic work environment with changing priorities, especially during peak visitor times or events.

Experience

  • Previous experience in janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping roles is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Gallery Assistants must be comfortable working in an environment that is at times noisy and crowded. Gallery Assistants are required during all hours that the Museum is open to the public, which includes school holidays. Weekend work is required.

Gallery Assistants are required to be on their feet for most of their shifts. Additionally, Gallery Assistants may occasionally be asked to lift or move objects of moderate weight.
