Job Title: Discovery Guide
Reports to: Manager of Guest Experiences
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly)
Hours: Part-time (up to 25 hours per week with additional hours optional)
Salary Range: $15.00 per hour
The Discovery Guides are part of the Guest Experiences team and are responsible for creating a positive and memorable experience for each visitor. Discovery Guides staff exhibits, facilitate activities, present field trips, and maintain the overall aesthetic of the museum with an emphasis on customer service, visitor engagement, and museum operations. The Discovery Guide creates a playful environment that facilitates open-ended experiences and allows our visitors to become more engaged in the museum. Discovery Guides must demonstrate commitment to the museum mission and the philosophy of play-based, experimental learning.
Primary Responsibilities and Results:
- Guide learning activities, programs, and/or demonstrations.
- Outline and enforce museum rules.
- Reset and restock museum exhibits continually throughout the day.
- Facilitate the daily opening and closing of exhibits as well as continually resetting the environment, stocking supplies, cleaning, and maintaining exhibits and public areas.
- Host daily activities, science demonstrations, member events, birthday parties, school tours, group visits and community/education outreach as needed.
- Assist in preparing materials and supplies for hands-on and/or craft activities.
- Collaborate with exhibit staff and Manager of Guest Experiences to identify exhibit safety issues and needed improvements to the galleries/facility.
- Check-in and stage school field trip tours including outlining CMT rules for group visits and school tours and presenting guided learning activities and/or demonstrations.
- Must be willing to be trained and certified in CPR/AED and first aid.
- Must be willing to attend all staff meetings/training sessions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have weekend availability. Shifts may also include weekdays, evenings, school vacations, and holidays.
- Duties may require frequent movement as well as the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time and/or transport light loads while in a highly sensory environment.
- Reliability and punctuality are required.
- Must be able to respond professionally to visitor concerns.
- Adherence to a uniform/dress code and code of conduct required.
- Ability to take direction and work independently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team-based environment.
- Ability to react positively to a rapidly changing environment and a wide variety of job demands.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience and/or educational training in working with children and/or families and/or a customer service focused environment.
- Comfort in leading presentations and demonstrated public speaking skills. Theatrical, performance, and/or professional teaching experience are a plus.
- Knowledge of the educational content and value of museum exhibits and programs.
- Enthusiasm for learning and mastering new skills on an ongoing basis.
- Proficient organizational and time management skills.
- Spanish fluency highly desired.
HOURS: Part-time, up to 25 hours per week with additional optional hours available. Shifts are 4.5 to 8 hours.
