Surgical Research Resident, Trauma Unit

The Surgical Research Resident is a current surgical resident in a gap year at another hospital that conducts research as a Research Postdoctoral Fellow in a department at Children's National Hospital. To maintain clinical competencies for residency, the Surgical Research Resident must perform clinical duties for 20% of their time under supervision of a surgeon on the surgery service. The Resident will be processed through the Graduate Medical Education Office to facilitate clinical credentialing.

The Research Postdoctoral Fellow is a "research trainee" for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies in laboratory or clinical research settings and may engage in any of the following activities. The research postdoctoral fellow will assist faculty in the conduct of research and reports to a principal investigator or CNRI Center Director. They may serve in several roles in the laboratory setting, depending on the scientific specialty and needs of the research project supported. They may participate directly in the design and conduct of experiments and therefore need technical knowledge and subject matter expertise encompassing several disciplines, such as molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology or animal science, as well as epidemiology, health services research, clinical research, trial design and human subjects protection, as applicable to the focus of the lab. Based on experience, the research postdoctoral fellow may train staff, graduate students and others in experimental procedures and study execution. The fellow will exercise general supervision in the workspace and assist with data management and analysis. In addition, the research postdoc fellow will be responsible for assisting the principal investigator in the planning and execution of research projects, grant applications and publications. They may further assist in the management of resource allocations, and may manage day-to-day activities for the research project, such as purchasing, oversight of laboratory animals, radioactivity and biosafety issues or human subjects enrollment and protection and regulatory reporting. The individual may also guide or lead the work of peers, technicians or other research support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments or complete large and complex projects.

Education

• Minimum Education: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) or Medical Doctor (M.D./D.O.) or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in a specific field (required)

Research Program Support

• Assists the principal investigator in the planning and execution research projects, grant applications and publications.
• May train technical staff, graduate students and others in laboratory procedures, provide general supervision in the laboratory and assist with data management and analysis, based on experience.
• May assist in the management of resource allocations, and may manage day-to-day activities in the laboratory, such as purchasing, oversight of laboratory animals, radioactivity, and biosafety issues.

Resident Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide the Graduate Medical Education office with all requested credentialing information.
• Comply with all Children's National's immunization, health screening, and drug testing requirements.
• Satisfy all other requirements for employment by Children's National.
• Access to information related to the impact of research time on future Board eligibility which may be obtained at the American Board of Pediatrics Website at: https://www.abp.org
• Comply with all Children's National policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program Policies and Procedures, Bylaws of the Medical Staff of Children's National, Rules and Regulations, and any individual educational and clinical policies and procedures of Children’s National GME, including Research Resident Clinical Supervision.
• Develop a personal program of learning to foster professional growth, with guidance from Program Director and clinical teaching staff.
• Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of your program and assume responsibility for teaching and supervising students as appropriate.
• Provide safe and appropriate care for patients, commensurate with your level of education, ability and experience as determined by and under the supervision of the teaching staff.
• Comply with applicable federal laws and the laws of the District of Columbia. Research Residents are not permitted to start training at Children's
• National until they have obtained the applicable DC training license.
• Perform duties under this Agreement during such hours as the clinical supervisor may direct in accordance with Children's National's Program
• Work Hours and Moonlighting Policies, including reporting to the Research Program Director or GME Office any work hour violations or concerns.
• Comply with Children's National's Intellectual Property Policy which details, Works of authorship, technical discoveries, inventions, marks or other items of commercial interest created by or resulting from research or investigations conducted by Children's National staff (including employees, faculty members, fellows, residents, consultants, trainees, students, and volunteers) on Children's National time or by anyone utilizing Children's National resources shall become the property of Children's National (or other appropriate Children's National subsidiary and affiliate) or its assignee.
