General Purpose Of The Job

The Chief Operations Officer (COO) will serve as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and must be a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who has a proven record in designing and implementing systems that support the organization’s growth and continuing operation by not only being able to solve challenges as they arise, but also have the ability to draw on their management experience to anticipate future challenges. They will have the personal presence and maturity required to effectively lead and manage an enthusiastic and dedicated staff.

The incumbent’s experience installing systems will assist Children’s Rescue Fund (CRF) in its goal of building a cohesive leadership team on multiple levels that inspires employees to produce at their highest levels. This individual will have responsibility for collaborating with other Senior Management team members to align operational goals with overall business strategy while ensuring that CRF shelter operations and administrative business operations are functioning effectively. This individual will bring a demonstrated record of successfully managing and enhancing the administration of a high-performing, growing nonprofit organization coupled with being a creative problem-solver who thrives on identifying solutions and focusing on what’s possible, while facilitating strong collaboration and communication across the organization.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to develop and implement the agency’s strategic plan by transforming strategic goals into actionable strategies, leading key initiatives that secure the organization's sustainability and extend its reach and effectiveness.
  • Drive the expansion and improvement of shelter services, supportive housing, childcare, and mental health services and ensuring scalability and sustainability.
  • Identify and mitigate risk, ensuring CRF is prepared for future challenges and opportunities.
  • Evaluate company performance and recommend strategies to improve results.

Leadership & Management

  • Demonstrate a visible and supportive leadership style by regularly engaging with employees and exhibiting professional and respectful role model behavior.
  • Set a clear, coherent vision for facilities across the portfolio, ensuring that facilities functions are executed at a consistent, high-quality level and work with all facilities managers and

teams to establish and hit annual facilities goals all while ensuring they are following regulatory requirements.

  • Exhibit a willingness to lead by example, getting hands-on and actively involved in operational aspects while removing any obstacles and barriers.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment where talented teams can thrive and collectively contribute to the mission.
  • Provide mentorship and development opportunities for high performing teams of directors and managers across various departments including shelter operations and administrative business functions.

Operational Efficiency

  • Identify and implement best practices in operational management, optimize resource allocation, and streamline processes to enhance service delivery.
  • Ensure all facilities are maintained in a safe, welcoming, supportive environment for clients and staff.
  • Support organizational growth efforts by overseeing the integration of new locations and ensuring a seamless transition into the operational framework.

Financial Responsibilities

  • In close collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), oversee operational budget management and ensure projected expenditures are aligned with budget and cash flow.
  • Work with the whole leadership to identify new funding streams and business opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including government, agencies, vendors, community partners and doners.
  • Represent the organization at public events, advocating for policies and initiatives that support our Mission and Values.
  • Participate in development activities to secure funding and resources necessary for agency development and growth.

  • Must be able to identify and anticipate any issue through research and propose the resolution.
  • Should possess a thorough understanding of industry requirements and transactions or related experience and all related departments’ roles in such transactions.
  • Creativity and an out of the box approach are required to improve all areas of responsibility.
  • Exceptional consulting skills with the ability to probe and actively listen to gain understanding and help clarify inquiries, needs, and/or root cause of an issue.
  • Working relationships and contacts :
  • Interact with other departments or divisions to ensure cooperation and the delivery of proper services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to work with outside regulators or investors.
  • A friendly, engaging personality is a plus to work with internal departments to research and resolve issues.
  • Must be able to present and explain documentation to senior management and management in control functions.
  • Impact/importance of function :
  • It is critical that the COO be capable of seamlessly transitioning into our senior management team by fitting into the organization’s culture. As a colleague and mentor, the COO serves in a unique position to bring program leaders and operational teams together to focus on creating an operation with meaningful, measurable outcomes. They will provide counsel and support to the CEO, the leadership team, and the Board of Directors on operations matters, as well as work on various strategic initiatives. The COO will collaborate with the executive, program, and finance staff in a supportive and direct manner.

Position Requirements And Minimum Qualifications

  • Job-related knowledge :
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive leadership experience in a mid-to-large organization with at least seven (7) years in a senior management role.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is a plus, but not required.
  • Direct work experience in and knowledge of nonprofit organizational operations and New York City/New York State governmental agencies and other government contract knowledge is greatly helpful.
  • Excellent business judgment and willingness to learn new practice areas.
  • Job-related skills, including language, mathematical, and reasoning (analytical) skills :
  • Utilize demonstrated good judgment, sensitivity, and high discretion in the handling of confidential information and consulting employees and management.
  • Communicate effectively and establish credibility throughout the organization with Senior Management, department heads, colleagues, and stakeholders as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges and potential risks.
  • Ability to provide thoughtful, progressive and strategic guidance.
  • Expertise in analysis, critical decision making, project management, and process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and work with analytical tools, reports and technology.
  • Excellence in being detail oriented with keen evaluative and mathematical skills.
  • High level of computer proficiency in MS Office: Outlook [email system] Word, Excel [with advanced level knowledge], PowerPoint, Adobe, internet navigation, and the ability to learn new technologies and databases.

  • Analytical thinker with a proven record of accomplishments in developing and executing successful operational strategies.
  • Ability to act as liaison among a range of internal customers, manage with influence by demonstrating strong communication, relationship management, organizational and analytical skills.

  • Superior with initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to be flexible and work both independently and as part of a team to complete complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skillfully adept and comfortable with crisis management.
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as resourcefulness while managing multi-site operations.
  • Licenses, certifications and degrees:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, management or related field, advanced degree preferred.

  • May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
  • Travelling throughout various locations in the New York City area.
  • Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 30 pounds several times a week.

Salary : $215,000 - $225,000
