Digital Illustrator for Immigrant / Refugee Student Advocacy Project
Position : Digital Illustrator
Location : Hybrid (In-Person at Afterschool Program in Maplewood working with students, Remote for follow-up work per input and direction from in-person sessions)
Hours : Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 : 30 PM - 4 : 45 PM (50 hours total contract, ending May 14, 2025)
Start Date : February 11, 2025
Compensation : $80 / hour
About the Project
We’re looking for a creative digital illustrator with lived experience as a member of an immigrant or refugee family to help immigrant and refugee students develop an illustrated graphic novella focused on sexual assault prevention. These middle and high school students have already completed an after-school curriculum on healthy relationships, covering important topics such as consent, boundaries, sexual harassment, and assault. As an artistic collaborator on this project, your role will be to support them in refining their ideas and bringing their concepts to life in a meaningful story with illustrations that promote believing and supporting survivors. The Healthy Relationships Program Coordinator will be at all in-person sessions to guide the discussions and provide support to the artist and students.
Role and Responsibilities
As the digital illustrator, your work will include :
- Facilitating Creative Collaboration :
Guide students as they brainstorm themes, develop characters, and create storyboards. Ensure their input, words, and ideas are reflected in the storytelling process.
Design visuals that bring students' ideas to life, with a focus on prevention, advocacy and empathy. Ensure that illustrations are culturally sensitive and relevant to the students' diverse backgrounds. Use the visuals to create a final graphic novella in digital format.
Help piece together students' ideas into a polished, cohesive narrative. Collaborate with program coordinator to ensure the final product aligns with the project's goals.
Participate in in-person sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 : 30 PM to 4 : 45 PM at the afterschool program, with additional remote work as needed to complete the finished product .
