Striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of families impacted by co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, the Recovery Peer Specialist - Family Intensive Treatment (FIT) mentors peers while providing non-clinical, evidence-based support, such as individual recovery planning and wellness self-management, to help peers navigate recovery systems and regain control over their lives. Primary Job Functions
Mentor peers while providing non-clinical, evidence-based support, such as individual recovery planning and wellness self-management, to help peers navigate recovery systems and regain control over their lives.
- Develop goals and strategies to address substance abuse, addiction, mental or behavioral health conditions.
- Create wellness recovery action plans identify wellness self-management and relapse prevention strategies.
- Encourage development of problem solving, time management, and decision making skills.
- Build relationships; use community resources, including educational, social, cultural and mutual self-help groups.
- Provide individualized support by sharing lived experiences where appropriate.
- Use evidence-based practices such as symptom management and reduction.
- Use SAMHA’s Wellness Initiative, including the Eight Dimensions of Wellness.
- Promote the development of self-efficacy through goal-oriented journeys.
- Assist in discovery of self-worth through experiences that create meaning, purpose and social connections.
- Facilitate peer-led discussion groups for mental health, addiction recovery and systems transformation.
- Encourage involvement in work, school, relationships, physical activity and self-directed hobbies.
- Document all interactions according to agency standards.
- Respond appropriately to personal stressors, triggers and indicators.
- Maintain Florida Certification Board continuing education requirements; seek training and technical assistance as needed.
- Attend community meetings address peer related needs and model recovery.
Contribute to a positive, engaging work environment.
- Develop a strong knowledge base and stay current on behavioral health-related issues and trends.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings, training and education, and the quality management process.
- Comply with CHS’s code of conduct, policies, practices, contracts and other legal obligations.
- Assist with training other team members and providing back up when necessary.
- Pick up projects on the fly; perform other duties as assigned from time to time.
- Demonstrate the CHS Common Bond Values in the performance of all job duties.
Job Qualifications
Education, Licenses & Certifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent, required.
- Bachelor’s in Human Services or related field from an accredited university, preferred.
- Certification by the Florida Certification Board as a Recovery Peer Specialist or Recovery Support Specialist – OR – direct personal experience living in recovery from substance abuse conditions for at least two years. If not certified, is permitted to obtain certification one year from date of employment.
- Florida Driver’s License within 30 days from hire required, along with daily access to reliable and insured vehicle.
Experience:
- One year of experience as a Recovery Peer Specialist, required.
- WRAP & WHAM or Peer Support Whole Health & Resiliency experience, strongly preferred.
- Must be self-identified current or former user of substance abuse, mental health or co-occurring services and have maintained recovery within the last two years.
