Additional Information Department: Level Three-CICU Hours per week: 36, eligible for benefits Shift: 12 hour shifts, nights (1845-0715), holiday and weekend requirement Job Overview The Clinical Assistant (CA) assists patients and families by supporting personal hygiene and daily living needs. The CA provides comfort, transportation, and vital sign monitoring.  In addition, the CA supports and assists nursing personnel and other providers in diagnostic procedures and technical treatments and functions as a member of the healthcare team. The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) on Anschutz campus at Children's Hospital Colorado offers state-of-the-art recovery and monitoring for acutely-ill cardiac patients and those recovering from heart surgery. With  the largest pediatric heart surgery program in the region, we perform more than 500 heart surgeries per year. Our highly specialized providers take on the most complex heart problems and achieve some of the best outcomes in the nation. The CICU team cares for patients across their entire lifespan and some of the subspecialty populations we commonly treat are: Maternal/Fetal, congenital heart disease, adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), heart transplant, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension and single ventricle patients. We offer care modalities that include Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD), Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and advanced pulmonary support. The CICU is served by an interdisciplinary team of highly specialized and trained team members including cardiac intensivists, bachelor’s prepared intensive care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, feeding specialists, social workers and education specialists that work closely with the heart surgeons, anesthesiologists and other caregivers. The training we offer our CICU team is diverse and emphasizes communication, teamwork, and critical thinking in addition to highly specialized clinical skills. We promote continued education and encourage team members to pursue specialty certifications. Responsibilities Population Specific Care a.) Neonate - <30 days b.) Infancy - >30 days to 1yr c.) Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs d.) Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs e.) School age - >5yrs to 13yrs f.) Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs g.) Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs. Essential Funcitons An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform. Attends to the individual needs of patients, which may include assistance with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, transferring, providing comfort and communicating patient needs with other members of the healthcare team. Performs various tasks as assigned, including checking vital signs, weighing patients, applying creams/ointments, applying/changing dressings and collecting specimens. Meets patient needs by utilizing resources and materials; transporting patients; answering patients' call lights and requests; and reporting observations of the patient to healthcare team members. Serves as a conduit between patients and other healthcare providers by recording and communicating all issues to medical team members. Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records. Stores and prepares rooms and medical equipment for patient and healthcare team member use. Participates in departmental committees and projects as assigned. Other Information SCOPE AND LEVEL Guidelines: Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment.  Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions. Complexity: Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy.  Employee primarily applies standardized practices. Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases.  Brings non-routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor. Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function. Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction.  Work product is subject to continual review. Qualifications EDUCATION – High school diploma or equivalent is required. CERTIFICATION(S) – Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association is required. Designation as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is required. Proof of successful completion of health assessment and nursing foundation courses, in addition to basic medical/surgical clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program may be considered in lieu of designation as a CNA, MA and/or EMT. LICENSURE – Current Colorado state CNA license or Current Colorado state Emergency Medical Technician-Basic or A-EMT or EMT-Intermediate.
