Job Overview
The Medical Coder performs mid-level coding expertise in the hospital’s health information management department. The coder assigns ICD (international classification of disease) codes and modifiers for diagnoses and procedures utilizing the hospital’s encoding software and appropriate procedural, terminology and health related common procedure coding books.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
Performs mid-level medical coding and charging. Encompassing but not limited to ambulatory clinic, outpatient, observation, ambulatory, emergency department charging, emergency inpatient coding. Performs associate level coding as required.
Analyses, researches and corrects moderately complex data integrity issues. Abstracts and collects pertinent patient information housed in the hospital’s database. Assigns appropriate charges for emergency and urgent care.
Contributes to coding compliance and departmental objectives by continuously developing coding abilities and performing duties in harmony with established professional coding standards.
Assists entry level coders in identifying basic data integrity issues within the electronic medical records system and subsequently facilitates corrections.
Utilizes coding software and coding reference books to perform day-to-day functions.
Maintains accuracy for all coding and productivity standards. Adheres to standard ethical coding guidelines established by professional health information management associations.

Complexity: Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.
Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non-routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.
Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.
Qualifications
EDUCATION – High School Diploma or Equivalent
EXPERIENCE – Three years of medical hospital coding and charging experience.
CERTIFICATION(S) - One of the following is required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS); Certified Professional Coder (CPC); Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Salary Information
Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $47,277.61 to $70,916.41
Hourly Salary Range: $22.73 to $34.09
