Additional Information Department: Respiratory Therapy IP Hours per week: 36, eligible for benefits Shift: Nightshift Every other weekend Holiday and on-call requirement per scheduling guidelines Job Overview The Respiratory Therapist (RT) Specialist provides family-centered care as demonstrated by recognizing the patient, family and/or designee as a full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’s preferences, values, and needs. The RT Specialist assumes an active role in clinical education of patients, families and staff; and functions as a role model within respiratory and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, teamwork, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care. Responsibilities POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE Neonate - <30 days Infancy - >30 days to 1yr Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs School age - >5yrs to 13yrs Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform. Functions independently in the Critical Care Areas (PICU, CICU, NICU, and MFCU), relevant Critical Care Charge roles. Assesses and evaluates unit delivery of patient and family centered care, incorporating the respiratory process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence based care. Role models and coaches patient and family care needs through assessing changes in patient outcomes/unit needs in the provision of care, within scope of practice. Identifies and works to removes barriers in order to promote communication and advocacy of patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of implementation of care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient/family learning needs to the interdisciplinary team. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team to coordinate individualized care and education for patients/families across the continuum. Participates in designing departmental or organizational systems that support effective teamwork. Participates in safety and quality of care projects and disseminates and incorporates into team setting. Provides direction and support to the team. Role models integration of evidence into practice. Identifies need for and/or participates in the development or revision of organizational or departmental policies, procedures or practice guidelines in comparison with evidence based clinical practice. Communicates the standard of care practices from applicable professional organization and/or association. Identifies gaps in best practice and participates in the implementation of unit, division or organizational quality improvement; and participates with the interdisciplinary team to improve quality and safety outcomes. Analyzes information and technology of patient, unit or organization outcomes to partner and foster communication, clinical decision making, error prevention, and care coordination. Maintains membership of a respiratory or professional healthcare organization as required to maintain credential. Participates in education by precepting and educating orientees, students, peers.  Acts as a clinical resource and/or presents clinical programs. Other Information SCOPE & LEVEL Guidelines: Advanced full performance professional level work that requires additional knowledge, education, training or experience. Guidelines are generally in the form of stated objectives only with issues and factors largely undefined requiring the employee to exercise creativity and ingenuity in devising criteria, techniques, strategy, and methodologies for approaching assigned functions or projects. Complexity: Duties performed involve concepts, theories, and concrete factors to be evaluated and weighed requiring a high degree of analytical ability, independent judgment, and decision-making. Acts as a subject matter expert in the field of expertise. Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed. Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where some degree of discretion and judgment are required in carrying out a major program and/or function of the organization. Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Work assignment is generally unstructured and employee is responsible for organizing complex, varied, and simultaneous coordination of several functions, programs, or projects in various stages of completion. Qualifications EDUCATION:  Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy or Respiratory Care is required at the time of hire. EXPERIENCE:  Minimum of three (3) years of experience delivering respiratory therapy/care, including a minimum of six (6) months of pediatric experience, is required at the time of hire. CERTIFICATION(S):  Certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Achievement and maintenance of a National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification of Neonatal-Pediatric Specialty is preferred. LICENSURE(S):  State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Respiratory Therapist license Physical Requirements Ability to Perform Essential Functions of the Job Body Movement:  Will frequently stand/walk up to 12 hours per day. Will frequently use hands while keyboarding and writing. Will frequently sit up to 2-4 hours per day while accessing computer, talking on the telephone, and while attending meetings. Back and Upper Body (lifting and carrying):  Will occasionally lift/force exerted up to 35 pounds/16 kilos. Vision:  Constantly uses sight in performance for daily job duties. Hearing:  Constantly uses hearing in performance for daily job duties. Others:  Able to assist or assume direct patient care as census directly permits.  Exposure to unsteady or falling patient: In the course of transferring a patient, may encounter a patient who falls or loses balance, causing employee to fall and/or bear the full weight of a patient.   WORK ENVIRONMENT Exposure: Exposure to blood/body fluid: Regular/Frequent.
