Performs quality control tests on functions and procedures of the Microbiology and Chemistry sections. Processes test results, patient charges and patient orders utilizing the LIS or manual methods. Files section reports. Performs other related duties as requested. Essential Functions
- Answers telephone, transfer calls, takes messages and locates test results.
- Uses the HIS and LIS to receive specimens and look up results.
- Retrieves specimens from the pneumatic tube system and delivers to the appropriate section.
- Processes and retains patient specimens in the Chemistry department utilizing resources for proper specimen requirements and handling.
- Handles all specimens for research studies, stimulations, diabetic studies or other special projects by accurate labeling, processing, transportation arrangements and documentation.
- Prepares slides and inoculates media for Microbiology specimens in an accurate and timely manner.
- Processes specimens sent to referral laboratories including packaging, courier notification, billing documentation and result retrieval.
- Enters preliminary referral laboratory results into the LIS.
- Communicates with other departments or laboratory sections when specimen integrity is questioned.
- Assists in quality control activities or functions in Microbiology and Chemistry.
- Adheres to established safety practices.
- Maintains inventory of supplies. Requests supplies and stocks incoming inventory.
- Supports new staff, current staff, and students in Orientation, Training, and Competency.
- Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
- Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section
- High School Diploma or GED Preferred or
- Equivalent ability to read, write and follow oral and written directions Preferred and
- Previous laboratory or scientific college courses Preferred and
- Job training usually accomplished in three to six months. Required
- Requires ability to read and write, follow oral and written directions, and communicate at a level normally acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or equivalent.
