Job Title: After School Staff
Responsible to: After School Coordinator
Status: Non-Exempt; Part-Time; Hourly
Job Purpose
Under general direction of the Afterschool Coordinator (Site Coordinator) and with guidance by designated school site management/and or certificated staff, After School Staff assist with the development and implementation of after school and other student learning activities and experiences, including organizing, and conducting classes, tutoring, program activities and events, and monitoring students.
Functions
Essential Functions
1. Assists in planning and implementation of academic, enrichment, health, and recreational extracurricular learning experiences for students.
2. Assists tutoring of students in academic subjects such as reading, writing, math, and other areas.
3. Works effectively with students in after school activities and assist with behavioral management, discipline, interpersonal actions, and act as a role model.
4. Helps mentor students in a variety of learning and life experiences.
5. Supports environments that are safe, healthy, and conducive to student learning.
6. Gathers and maintains student participation, development, and achievement data for program evaluation efforts.
7. Participates in staff training and professional development opportunities.
8. Implements strategies (sensory, positioning, behavior, language, etc.) in accordance with school policies and procedures, and IEP goals.
9. Mediates interpersonal conflicts between students effectively in accordance with school policies and procedures.
10. Serves as a mandated reporter and follows school policies and procedures for reporting student injuries and incidents (ie. child abuse, substance abuse, sexual harassment, violence, etc.).
Other Functions
1. Carries out programs designed to meet the individual identified needs of eligible students as prescribed and implemented by teachers and DIS Providers, also known as case managers.
2. Supports students who may demonstrate challenging behaviors by proactively working with case managers and team members to implement the behavior support plan and/or crisis plan.
3. Assists students with all aspects of toileting; changing, lifting on/off the toilet, changing tables or mats.
4. Administers first aid and provides basic nursing care to students, including but not limited to the use of
5. airway suctioning equipment.
6. Performs Paraprofessional duties as needed to cover absences.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
An earned high school diploma.
Experience
At least three to six months of experience working with children of varying ages, needs, abilities, and backgrounds. School-based experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Child and youth learning activities such as academic achievement; educational enrichment; visual/performing arts; health/nutrition/technology; sports/recreation; and cultural groups and events.
2. Techniques and methods of student supervision and behavior management.
3. Cultural and physical differences and needs of children in assigned activities.
4. Basic computer and technology applications
5. English usage, spelling, and writing.
6. Work effectively with students of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
7. Establish and maintain effective working relations with program and school personnel.
8. Learn basic first aid and safety requirements.
9. Communicate effectively in oral and written expression.
10. Physically perform job tasks.
11. Follow directions and function within program policies and procedures.
Physical Requirements
• Continual speaking, hearing, seeing, walking, and standing (67% - 100% of shift);
• Frequent sitting, reaching, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, and grasping (34% - 66% of shift);
• Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of weight up to 50 pounds (11%-33% of shift);
• Seldom running (1%-10% of shift)
Environment
This position will include indoor and outdoor work (classrooms, offices, cafeteria, eating area, common area, auditorium, playground(s), restroom(s), stairs if applicable, roof(s) and parking lot(s)) and/or shop environments including confined spaces with the following possible exposures: dust; wind; sun; insects; chemicals including hazardous chemicals, solvents and oil; fumes from chemicals and odors; grease; bloodborne pathogens and biohazardous waste; variances in temperature; variances in weather conditions (snow, rain, sleet, etc.); electrically and mechanically operated equipment with moving parts; noise which can range from quiet to loud; playground projectiles such as baseballs, footballs, basketballs, etc.; intervening physically to stop conflicts between angry or emotionally upset students; and, dealing with students, parents, employees and the general public who may exhibit unpredictable or anti-social behavior.
