Description

Job Title: Assistant Principal

Responsible to: Executive Director

Responsible for: Certificated, classified and unclassified staff, as assigned

Status: Exempt; Full Time; Salary

 

Job Purpose

Assists the School Principals in performing elementary and middle school management duties required by law, by the rules of the Board of Education, and by District policies and procedures. Assists the School Principals in maintaining a comprehensive, instructionally effective and compliant program that accelerates the academic achievement for all student subgroups and targeted populations.

 

Functions

Educational Leadership

  1. Assists in the implementation of core and supplemental instructional programs, in elementary and middle school.
  2. Supervises and monitors the instructional program providing development, support, guidance, and evaluation to build the capacity of teachers in implementing effective teaching strategies to ensure the academic achievement of all student subgroups and targeted student populations.
  3. Ensures quality instruction and cognitively challenging curriculum that satisfies all California Common Core State Standards, prepares students for all required state testing, and focuses on high standards of student achievement.
  4. Coordinates student assessment programs (SBAC, ELPAC, GATE, etc.) and uses data to guide learning.
  5. Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, conferences, and trainings as an administrative representative of the school.
  6. Collaboratively creates and implements school-wide programs such as Student Success Team (SST), Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and Restorative Justice to identify necessary student support services (e.g. counseling, assessment, and interventions).
  7. Counsels students, recommends, and implements student intervention or disciplinary actions in accordance with the Education Code, school policy and procedures, and the school’s student responsibility code.
  8. Complies with and implements the California Education Code and ensures respective data is entered into all district systems (i.e. CALPADS).
  9. Assists School Principals with organizing student extra-curricular activities and fundraising events.

 

Community Leadership

  1. Fosters a community and organizational culture that embodies the school's mission, vision, academic philosophy, and core values.
  2. Maintains positive public relations and outreach contacts with stakeholders.
  3. Serves as a resource for and liaison to the stakeholders of the school community.
  4. Ensures that all members of the school community are engaged and valued.
  5. Supports communication among stakeholders by ensuring information is clear, effective, and accessible.
  6. Engages in school activities and fundraisers outside of the instructional day to support the overall life of the school.

 

Operational Leadership

  1. Participates in the recruitment and hiring of certificated and classified staff using internal and external resources.
  2. Contributes to managing and evaluating the performance of certificated staff, providing continuous formal and informal feedback.
  3. Assists the school principals with providing ongoing professional development for all stakeholders, specifically in best practice methods of behavior management, classroom management, and student discipline.
  4. Interprets and implements state and federal laws and mandates, Board of Education rules, district policies and procedures, local building and safety requirements, and restructuring and reform efforts, to ensure instructional monitoring and compliance needs.
  5. Partners with the Executive Director to formulate, interpret, and implement the school’s policies and procedures (as outlined in Fiscal Policies, Student Handbook, Employee Handbook and Parent Handbook).
  6. Reports on activities, organizational development progress, compliance requirements, and student achievement to the school’s board, LAUSD, and other applicable state and federal reporting agencies.
  7. Conducts outreach to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward connections with outside entities to attract new resources for the school.
  8. Participates in school accreditation, oversight visits, and audits and may lead certain portions of validation processes.
  9. Serves as a mandated reporter and follows school policies and procedures for reporting student injuries and incidents (ie. child abuse, substance abuse, sexual harassment, violence, etc).

Qualifications

Education

  1. An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard from an accredited college or university.
  2. At least four semester units in multicultural education or equivalent study (effective July 1, 2007). Multicultural understanding coursework must pertain to a minority group represented in the District student enrollment.
  3. At least two semester units each (six semester units total), or the equivalent, of coursework in culture, language, and methodology to meet the requirements of the District’s English Learner Master Plan.

 

Experience

  1. At least five years of successful full-time service in a public school certificated position(s).
  2. At least three years as a teacher in a TK-8 public school program.
  3. Two years of experience at an elementary or middle school.
  4. At least one year of verifiable experience in a non-classroom leadership position such as coordinator, instructional coach, etc.

    NOTE: No more than one year of service may be credited for any school year except that service used to satisfy experience requirement 2. and 3., may have been concurrent with the service listed in requirement 1. For definitions of years of service, refer to Policy Guide E23.

 

Credential

  1. A valid California teaching credential requiring a bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching.
  2. A valid Administrative Services Credential authorizing K-12 service.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of the fundamental principles and accepted practices, current trends, literature and research surrounding instructional programs, curriculum, and state standards.
  2. Knowledge of state, federal, and local policies, rules, and regulations pertaining to all student subgroups and targeted student populations including English learners, foster youth, low-income students, standard English learners, and students with disabilities.
  3. Knowledge of the Education Code, Board Rules, District policies, operating procedures.
  4. Understanding of and sensitivity to diversity in the school community and knowledge of resources and instructional materials related to diversity.
  5. Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth patterns of students.
  6. Ability to organize and direct an educational program that provides for the social, emotional, and intellectual development of students, TK-8th grade.
  7. Skill in leading an instructional program including facilitating group processes, consensus building, and conflict resolution.
  8. Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families.
  10. Ability to lead, direct, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  11. Ability to promote and provide opportunities for recognition, development, and leadership among students, staff, parents, and colleagues.
  12. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with students, parents, and school staff, both individually and as a group.
  13. Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socio-economic groups.
  14. Ability to compose and comprehend written communication and communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff, both individually and as a group.
  15. Ability to effectively utilize computer technologies and associated software.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Continual speaking, hearing, seeing, walking, and standing (67% - 100% of shift);
  • Frequent sitting, reaching, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, grasping, and typing (34% - 66% of shift);
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of weight up to 50 pounds (11%-33% of shift);
  • Seldom running (1%-10% of shift).

 

Environment

This position will include indoor and outdoor work (classrooms, offices, cafeteria, eating area, common area, auditorium, playground(s), restroom(s), stairs if applicable, roof(s) and parking lot(s)) and/or shop environments including confined spaces with the following possible exposures: dust; wind; sun; insects; chemicals including hazardous chemicals, solvents and oil; fumes from chemicals and odors; grease; bloodborne pathogens and biohazardous waste; variances in temperature; variances in weather conditions (snow, rain, sleet, etc.); electrically and mechanically operated equipment with moving parts; noise which can range from quiet to loud; playground projectiles such as baseballs, footballs, basketballs, etc.; intervening physically to stop conflicts between angry or emotionally upset students; and, dealing with students, parents, employees and the general public who may exhibit unpredictable or anti-social behavior.
