ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1965, the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant, and low-income communities. Today, CPC is the nation's largest Asian American social services agency and offers more than 50 programs at over 35 sites throughout New York City, including early childhood education, school-age care, youth services, workforce development, community services, and senior services. CPC strives to be the premier social service and leadership development organization. In 2017, CPC launched Advancing Our CommUNITY, its organization-wide strategy to expand services to address persistent needs and emerging trends and to improve leadership skills among staff and community members. In 2022, our core programs and emergency services reached 200,000 people living in all five boroughs and all 51 city council districts. PROGRAM SUMMARY
Since 1998, CPC Adult Literacy Program has provided thousands of community members with free, high-quality English-language instruction in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. Through our program, community members gain practical, everyday English skills that are critical to a better quality of life in New York City. Other program supports include community education workshops and citizenship test preparation.
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Program Director, the Program Assistant should have excellent communication skills, problem solving skills, be collaborative, and be interested in working to improve the quality of life for our community members.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support program outreach, intake, enrollment, and retention efforts
- Communicate with students with phone calls, emails, and WeChat to set up appointments, answer questions, and provide referrals to additional services
- Support administrative team with filing, managing data, maintaining program records, scheduling make-up sessions and communicating with teachers
- Manage classroom paperwork, including student application forms, attendance sheets, progress notes, student worksheets, and student homework
- Support the Adult Literacy Program and CPC with ongoing advocacy efforts
- Attend meetings and professional development training as required
- Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Adult Literacy Program Director, including traveling to different community centers and assisting with online programming
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma required
- Minimum 1 year experience working with immigrant and low-English proficient population
Skills and Competencies:
- Must be fluent in Spanish
- Fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese also preferred, but not required
- Excellent facilitation, time management, multitasking, and interpersonal skills
- Must have excellent computer skills
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW
- $20.88 - $21.98 per hour; 35 hours per week
- CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
