DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Provides an educational program for pupils who have physical and/or mental handicaps and have been placed by an IEP committee in a program for pupils who are severely handicapped.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaches severely handicapped pupils in a special day class, the basic learning skills, self help skills and community critical skills commensurate with the emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the pupil.
Provides individualized and small group instruction to assist pupils express his/her personal needs and ideas.
Provides individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems which relate to the pupil's total growth and development.
Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil's progress.
Assists other professional staff members in the diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of pupil's progress.
Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, social skills, and self image.
Arranges with staff for integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where pupils can meet with success.
Coordinates a community based critical skills model program. Serves as a member of the individual education plan team.
Provides continual supervision on an "on-call" basis for pupils assigned to his group as problem situations arise elsewhere in the school.
Performs all other functions performed by regular classroom teachers.
Develops weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy and curriculum of the District.
Provides students with the opportunity to partake in daily patriotic observance. Education Code 52720.
Monitors classroom environment to ensure clean and safe conditions exist, notifying principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions.
Monitors classroom activities making students responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of class session.

Responsible to: School principal with staff assistance from the Special Education Department.
Responsible for: Students assigned to severely handicapped class. Severely Handicapped Credential.
CREDENTIAL:
Severely Handicapped Credential.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Course work in the psychological characteristics of exceptional children and remedial
EXPERIENCE:
Extensive experience in working with severely handicapped pupils, and/or in remedial teaching techniques. Community based critical skills is desirable, as is experience with establishing behavior management programs.
PERSONAL QUALITIES:
Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Empathy for pupils with severe learning problems (academic and emotional) and the ability to gain job satisfaction from observing small steps of growth. Ability to relate to students, parents, medical and psychological advisors, school administrators, and other classroom teachers.
