Purpose of Position
JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Nutritionist include but are not limited to plan, provide and evaluate nutrition education and counseling for individuals and groups participating in County and/or public health departmental programs including but not limited to WIC, Prenatal Care Coordination, Employee Wellness, Breastfeeding Peer Counseling and special grant projects; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public.
Nutritionist LTE (Limited Term Employment) working approximately 8-16 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative Functions: Assess and determine WIC program applicants’ eligibility and certify them according to WIC policies/procedures and professional nutrition standards. Assess clients for nutritional counseling needs and provide nutrition counseling. Tailor WIC food packages and issue breast pumps based upon assessed needs. Document assessment and services provided.- Complete nutrition assessment and provide nutrition counseling as needed for participants of departmental programs. Document care provided. Communicate nutrition care provided to clients’ care coordinators within confidentiality policies.
- Refer clients according to assessment to health services, social services, other public health programs or community resources within confidentiality policies. Prepare related documents.
- Maintain knowledge of current program rules, regulations and reporting requirements. Attend and participate in on-going training.
- Assist with departmental nutrition training, including training of dietetic and nursing student interns for public health nutrition workforce development.
- Maintain and assure confidentiality, adhering to MOU agreements when working with WIC clients and records.
- Assist issuing WIC benefits, weighing and measuring infants/children, performing finger or heel stick blood draws, scheduling, determining client income, etc., as staff shortages require.
- Assist in set up and tear down of clinic areas.
- Support and participate in Public Health accreditation, re-accreditation, 140 review, annual report, and department strategic plan as assigned by the Manager.
Additional Full Time Status Nutritionist Position Responsibilities:
- Fulfills the role of the local WIC Project Nutritionist and is responsible for assuring quality nutrition services, as described in the USDA Nutrition Services Standards. This includes compliance with nutrition policies and procedures in the Wisconsin WIC Operations Manual.
- Provides oversight to ensure nutrition integrity for all nutrition-related activities in the WIC project.
- In the absence of the WIC Director/Nutritionist, assume primary responsibility for WIC clinic operations and supervision of WIC clinic staff.
- Develop or obtain appropriate printed or electronic nutrition education materials needed for departmental programs and services.
- Serve as the WIC Project Breastfeeding Coordinator and effectively implement the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling program as defined by the WIC Operations Manual, Nutrition Services Policy 3.42.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of nutrition education and breastfeeding-related materials and supplies.
- Participate in department-wide performance management/quality improvement and strategic planning activities as assigned.
- Participate in department-wide preparedness activities to include National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) training and exercises. Assists in public health emergency response as assigned.
- Serve as Fit Families Coach, ensuring monthly contacts are completed and resources are provided to assist participants in meeting the goals they set.
- Serve as a preceptor for dietetic students or interns.
- Monitor and review WIC RD’s through annual observations and files reviews.
Community Relations Functions:
- Develop, provide and evaluate group nutrition presentations.
- Participate in related staff meetings, committee meetings, and community task forces as assigned or needed.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics required.
- One (1) year of full-time or part-time work experience required.
- Has demonstrated experience in program management required.
- Wisconsin Certified Dietitian and Registered Dietitian with the National Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), or the ability to be certified within six (6) months of hire required.
- One (1) year public health, community nutrition/maternal-child health, lactation and nutrition experience or previous WIC program experience preferred.
- Completed Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC), Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), or Certified Breastfeeding Educator (CBE) training preferred.
- Must obtain a minimum of one (1) of the above listed lactation certifications within 12 months of hire. (full-time position only)
- A valid driver’s license required.
