Engine Captain (ENGB)

Job Summary: An Engine Captain (Engine Boss) at Chloeta will participate in wildfire prevention and mitigation work for structure protection. This role will be focused mainly on property insurance protection and not on suppression activities. Engine Captains also lead their crews in physical training, basic engine maintenance, wildfire staging, homeowner assessments, data collection and prescribed burn assignments.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Engine Captains maintain operational control of the engine and crew, overseeing work assignments as designated by Battalion Chiefs, Division Chiefs, and the Fire Chief.

Job Classification: Full Time, Permanent

Travel: Engine Captains deploy from home of record. There is 90-100% travel in the United States involved with the position.

Compensation:

  • $26 per hour
  • FLSA non-exempt

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct operations in accordance with the guidelines stated in the IRPG, incident-specific objectives, and agency-specific guidance.
  • Perform Industry standard Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) structure protection tasks in support of local areas having jurisdiction and State Protection missions.
  • Conduct daily data collection on threatened policies and accurately enter the information into company databases.
  • Receive and execute daily work assignments from Battalion Chiefs and/or higher authority.
  • Remain skilled in and properly apply modern fire suppression and prevention tactics, methods, and procedures.
  • Lead the engine crew to safely and efficiently complete assigned tasks.
  • Ensure punctuality for crew on all assignments.
  • Ensure accurate daily time documentation for self and crew.
  • Maintain company-issued equipment to uphold and present a professional image of the company.
  • Lead effectively in high stress environments.
  • Manage daily data collection on threatened policies and accurately input information into company databases.
  • Serve as an example to ensure crew safety and welfare, adhering to all relevant safety and legal regulations and policies.
  • Utilize and maintain all apparatus, tools, and equipment promptly and correctly for property protection.
  • Assist in the implementation and delivery of ongoing training programs, conduct remedial training, and assess crew members to identify additional training opportunities.
  • Maintain a positive working environment and strive to exceed the company and client’s needs.
  • Perform maintenance and testing of assigned engines, tools, and equipment, ensuring they remain in good working and safe condition and report deficiencies.
  • Must be proficient in utilizing technology such as computers and tablets/iPads.
  • Serve as a positive example, representing both the company and self with the highest standards in all interactions.
  • Oversee routine administrative tasks for yourself and your crew, including time entry, expense reporting, hours of service, and compliance.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in pumping, drafting, and water shuttle operations.
  • Maintain expertise and knowledge in current fire suppression tactics, methods, and procedures.
  • Operate company vehicles and equipment safely and in strict adherence to both legal regulations and company policies.
  • Ensure adherence to established company procedures when responding to incidents.

Required Skills/Certifications:

  • Must have a current/valid State Issued Driver License (DL)
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • A current national DOT Medical Examiner’s Certification, verified by the FMCSA.

  • (L-180) Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service

  • (S-190) Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
  • (RT-130) Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher
  • (S-230) Crew Boss (Single Resource) or (S-231) Engine Boss
  • (S-290) Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
  • (PMS 311-13) Completion and Qualification of NWCG Engine Boss, Single Resource (ENGB) Position Task Book

Education and Experience:

  • Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Required: Satisfactory performance as a Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)
  • Preferred: Experience supervising a Wildland/Type 6 Engine
  • License verification, education, and certifications must be provided at the time of application and can also be emailed to certification@ chloeta.com

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a WCT (Work Capacity Test / “Pack Test”) at Arduous Level (Complete a 3-mile walk wearing a 45-pound pack in less than 45 minutes)
  • Must be able to lift, pull, or push up to 45lbs
  • Must maintain a prominent level of physical fitness.

Pre-employment Requirements: Due to the nature of Chloeta’s services, this position is contingent upon completing with a satisfactory outcome some or all of the following pre-employment background screenings: government security clearance, federal and state criminal background checks, drug test (urinalysis), Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, educational history, employment history, and/or credit check. In accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), pre-employment background screenings will require the employee’s written authorization and will occur after acceptance of an offer of employment and prior to commencing work. Additionally, employees are required to complete the federal I-9/E-Verify process.

Emergency Response: Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
