JOB TITLE : READING SPECIALIST TEACHER

SALARY LEVEL : NEGOTIATED SALARY SCHEDULE

DEPARTMENT : INSTRUCTION

REPORTS TO : ELEMENTARY / SECONDARY PRINCIPAL

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :

Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from four year college or university; Elementary or Reading Specialist teaching certificate. Must meet state requirements to be considered a "Highly Qualified" teacher.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and / or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumferences, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY :

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Performs intensive interventions. Teaches reading and language arts to pupils in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities based on student's IEP.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil's progress and interpret the school's programs.
  • Indentifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Creates and effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service educational activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district and state testing program.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
  • Develops and uses instructional material suitable for verbal or visual instruction of pupils with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities.
  • Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the pupils make a satisfactory transition to school.
  • Completes all paperwork, district, state and federal forms, in a timely manner.
  • Works with regular classroom teacher to provide appropriate accommodations for students.
  • Other duties that may be assigned by the administrator
