Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's pursuit of personal excellence in academics and character so they are prepared for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders.
Position Overview. Christchurch School is looking to find the next leader of our boy’s lacrosse program who also wants to be a part of a broader educational setting. We know that many people come to education through coaching and have several openings in various academic disciplines for the right candidate. Our lacrosse program is consistently competitive in VISAA Division 1 each spring. Our previous coach has already established recruiting networks in various locations within the United States and in Canada. The new coach will be excited about building on that strong tradition while ensuring that student-athletes come to Christchurch for the totality of the CCS experience and not only to play lacrosse. Equally, they will be excited to build a program that fosters all levels of lacrosse interest and ability: entry level, developing, and collegiate athlete hopeful. While we want a competitive program, more we want the next program leader to continue to help foster young men who value character, curiosity, and community. We define success from the types of experiences our student-athletes have as they grow and mature rather than the numbers of wins and losses. If you have teaching experience that is an added benefit but is not a pre-requisite for the position. A passion to learn and to work with high school age students in a boarding school setting is a necessity. As is a desire to see the work of a coach as contributing to many areas of the life of a boarding school environment. Equally, if not already experienced in classroom teaching, the desire to grow in that part of the profession is important.
A typical load is teaching 4 sections of a course, coaching 2 seasons of co-curriculars (this could include strength and conditioning in one of the other seasons or another area of co-curriculars altogether), and contributing to the boarding school life by doing duty one night a week and weekend duty approximately 6 weekends a year. Possible teaching positions could be in humanities, science, math, or computer science/design and tech. If you have a background in those academic areas and want to add coaching experience with teaching experience, please consider applying. This could be a particularly exciting opportunity for someone just out of college considering education as a career.
Being a part of a boarding school comes with other benefits beyond the coaching and community. Our school is located on the beautiful Rappahannock River along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Our location provides recreational opportunities on the water and is within an hour drive of major cities and airports.
If interested in learning more, please submit an electronic resume and a letter of interest to teach@christchurchschool.org. Candidates will be contacted within two weeks of receiving application materials if we are interested in setting up an initial phone interview.
Studies have shown that women, people of color, and those just beginning in education are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background or who is excited about gaining the experience described in the listing. We believe deeply in a boarding school model of education and are interested in people who find the idea of teaching young people in all capacities of their lives compelling. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of our qualifications as described.
