Job Description:

This position focuses on the core responsibilities associated with screening students for financial aid eligibility and providing comprehensive counseling services in financial aid. The Financial Aid Counselor will conduct student need analysis, perform federal verifications and packaging of student aid, certify federal loan eligibility, provide financial aid counseling, make professional judgment decisions regarding student aid eligibility, and facilitate problem-solving with prospective and current students, including parents and legal guardians. The chosen candidate for this job will interact with specific outside agencies to facilitate the student eligibility process, and he/she will be accountable for ensuring compliance with federal regulations.

  • Conducts needs analysis in compliance with federal criteria to determine the relative eligibility of each financial aid applicant.
  • Conducts verification of student and parent application data in compliance with federal criteria.
  • Determines the types and amounts of financial aid to be awarded through the packaging process according to federal, state, and institutional requirements. Monitors individual student awards?Resolves data conflicts and over-awards.
  • Collaborate with team members on individual student appeals concerning eligibility. Utilizes professional judgment to adjust a student's eligibility based on documented mitigating circumstances following federal statutes. Complex eligibility situations may be referred to the Director of Financial Aid.
  • Repackage or revise aid due to status changes and use professional judgment as it pertains to extenuating circumstances in alignment with the University's goals.
  • Provides financial aid counseling to students and parents regarding all aspects of the process of financial assistance. Make necessary referrals to other student service offices.
  • Maintains knowledge of policies within other departments (Admissions, Registrar, Student Success, Business Office, and Student Life) to understand the impact of aid and student eligibility. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides support to students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises that may impact school performance?specific focus on working with special needs populations to identify unique needs and coordinate appropriate services.
  • Monitors and evaluates students' satisfactory academic progress. Assists with adjudication of student appeals relating to academic progress.
  • Maintains the highest level of customer service, including student confidentiality, in accordance with FERPA regulations.
  • Interacts with appropriate outside entities to facilitate the student eligibility process.
  • Participates in developing institutional financial aid policies and procedures that will positively impact the efficiency and quality of service provided.
  • Prepare and deliver financial aid presentations to the campus community and other external stakeholders and advocate for financial literacy.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation via data entry systems.
  • Participate in annual training and professional organizations to keep abreast of new information and program changes to be implemented.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, pay attention to detail, handle multiple tasks, and prioritize duties.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Overall proficient skill level in Microsoft Office includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and basic computer concepts.
  • Promote a professional appearance and attitude and engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment where all people are valued and supported.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse population and possess a skill set to resolve complex issues. Two years of Title IV financial aid experience.
  • Knowledge of Banner (Ellucian) student information system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of Title IV financial aid experience
