Job Description
The Charge Nurse, will assist the Director of Nursing by providing hands on care with the facility’s residents and supervision of the Certified Nurse Aides; while also providing physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents in a loving, caring, dignified and Christian environment.
Essential Job Functions
- Embraces the nursing philosophy and mission of caring for the resident body, mind, and spirit while promoting wellness in the elderly.
- Understands the facility mission and core values and integrates them into daily work practices.
- Promote a team-centered environment by assisting other members of the care delivery team as needed.
- Identify the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the residents and coordinates care of all residents on the unit in partnership with the Director of Nursing and interdisciplinary team.
Job Specific Duties
- Coordinates and directs the nursing assistants assigned to the unit, as well as supervises the direct care given by the nursing assistants.
- Completes assignment for nursing assistants according to schedule, resident needs and unit when Director of Nursing, or assignment is missing.
- Communicates information regarding the resident’s needs, problems, nursing goals and plan of care with nursing assistants. This begins with shift report and is on-going as conditions of the resident changes.
- Administers medications as ordered by physicians and in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
- Update resident care plans as appropriate between resident care planning and committee reviews.
- Maintain communication with families, guardians or significant others regarding the resident’s status, their needs and their concerns.
- Evaluate the performance of nursing assistants assigned to the unit and make recommendations for resolution.
- Ensure that the safety and infection control principles and practices are carried out by all personnel, residents and visitors.
Education / Experience
- Must have an unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Michigan. Must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
- Must have a license of satisfactory completion from an accredited school of nursing.
- Prefer one year experience in Medical/Surgical or geriatric nursing in a hospital and/or nursing home with charge nurse or equivalent health care or leadership experience.

- Strong communication abilities, able to collaborate and be a team player.
Skills
- Demonstrates knowledge and good judgment in matters of policy and procedure.
- Able to help the nursing department develop good strategic plans.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in the area of creative problem-solving, conflict resolution, group planning and decision-making processes.
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies and guiding investment in people and systems.
- Technologically savvy, with an ability to learn new processes and systems that increase efficiency in a fast-moving environment.
