The CHCS Librarian fosters a love of reading and learning by maintaining a well-organized, welcoming library space, developing a library curriculum for early grades, supporting teachers with reading programs and research materials, and managing all aspects of book circulation and collection maintenance. The librarian plays a key role in cultivating reading habits in students and promoting the values of classical, Christ-centered education.
Key Responsibilities:
Library Class Instruction
- Lead weekly 40-minute library classes for grades K4 through 5th.
- Prepare and teach a foundational library skills curriculum (15 minutes per session) for kindergarten and 1st grade.
- Assist students in selecting age-appropriate books and checking them out.
- Implement reading incentive programs and track student reading comprehension (similar to Accelerated Reader).
- Encourage student use of library materials for class assignments and independent reading.
Library Management
- Shelve and straighten books regularly to maintain a neat and organized library.
- Process, organize, and circulate all library materials, including new acquisitions and donations.
- Promote summer reading with grade-specific book lists, reading record forms, and library access during the summer.
- Maintain library inventory and user database using Concourse Book Systems software.
- Add new students, update classes each fall, and manage overdue/lost books throughout the year.
- Generate and distribute overdue and fine notices in December and May.
Book Processing and Acquisitions
- Process books (including barcode, spine label, card, and pocket) to make them shelf-ready according to CHCS guidelines.
- Use Library of Congress data for cataloging each new book.
- Purchase books based on summer reading lists, teacher input, curriculum needs, and policy guidelines (with Principal consultation).
- Add donor plates to books received for Grandparents’ Day and coordinate book table setup (or donation method for drive-thru events).
Teacher Collaboration
- Solicit and incorporate teacher input when selecting new books and research materials.
- Coordinate with teachers to implement reading programs and encourage student participation.
- Support classroom instruction by helping students find books aligned with assignments and curriculum.
Reading Program & Summer Incentives
- Track and promote established reading programs, monitoring student goals and progress.
- Celebrate summer reading accomplishments with gift card rewards for top readers in each class and the school.
- Organize and distribute rewards (treat bags or party) to students who submit reading records or complete book quizzes.
- Plan and promote summer library days to encourage year-round reading habits.
Required Qualifications:
- Passion for reading and working with children in a Christ-centered educational environment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with children’s literature and classical education principles.
- Proficiency with or willingness to learn Concourse Book Systems or other library software.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with accuracy and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field.
- Prior experience working in a school library or educational setting.
- Knowledge of classical Christian education and alignment with the mission and values of CHCS.
